Can someone shed some light on this idea that Newton is dumb?

Recommended Posts

You know what is worse than playing the race card? Is everytime someone suggests that race may play a part some of you guys jumps down their throat and calls the poster an asshole and a race baiter.

There is no doubt that race probably plays a part in the perception of Cam Newton. Doesn't mean you are playing the fugging race card.

There have been other people of a different race that have done worse things than Cam Newton and succeeded and people called that redemption.

I have not heard any comments to suggest he is dumb, as in intelligence. I have heard people question his ability to quickly absorb a thick, complicated play book (a la Dwayne Jarret) and/or his ability to read defenses, quickly ascertain what defense he is facing, run through his checkdowns etc. The latter is not as much an issue of being 'smart' as it is having had the sufficient experience at doing so. Jimmy Clausen was considered the most 'Panther-ready' QB in the draft 2 years ago because he ran such a similar offense in college to Carolina's; however, he struggled last year (behind a patchwork OL, rookie WRs, and defenses loading the box to stop the run). His story only goes to prove that HAVING experience doing all that stuff - reading defenses, running a similar drop-back offense, etc - doesn't guarantee success! While there is a lot of speculation of what might or might not be true, only Cam Newton has the answers and will be able to set us straight when he takes the field.

The OP wasn't talking about just here on the Huddle where we are all reasonable people that are sensitive to such controversial stuff  Go read comments under nearly every article written about Cam Newton. Heck go read the comments under the articles in the Charlotte Observer website.

I have a question that maybe some of you know the answer to. I just may have missed it since I’ve been out of the country a lot. Why did Cam go the JUCO route after the Florida incidents? From what I’ve seen over the years, a very talented player usually only goes JUCO if they don’t have the grades or test scores to be accepted at the school they choose. Go JUCO; build up college credit, then come to play out their final two years at their chosen school. The questions of his intelligence that I have seen from the talking heads, (again only a few since I wasn’t in the US much) usually bring this up saying if he had the grades he would have been picked up by a big school who didn’t care as much about the problems off the field. Just haven’t heard, with his talent, why he had to spend two years at Blinn if he had the intelligence to match.

He's done some pretty fuging stupid things. Like buying a previously stolen laptop, then throwing it out the window when the cops got there.. Also getting caught cheating twice is pretty hard to do, especially when you're a football player at Florida.

That being said, all of this is done off the football field, and it's never affected his performance so I could care less.

did those things his freshman year. hasn't done anything since.

results of a dumb kid and evidence since then has been it was something he grew out of, otherwise there would have been more to talk about.

having to resort to cheating on a test or being a bad test taker doesn't mean you are unintelligent, either. cheating may show a couple other things about you at that moment, but you can be intelligent and have trouble taking tests. lots of things that can contribute to that.

he might be a bit clumsy with the way he words things, but he's still just a kid.

people will keep on finding ways to hate the guy (but "support" him because he's a panther now).

haven't heard those things from people who have actually worked with him. until they have given him a playbook or coached him, they are just talking out of their butts. everyone who has worked with him has been impressed with his ability to pick things up quickly. mahlzahn did change the playbook some with newton there, but it was to take advantage of his athletic ability...not because he can't comprehend the material.

He only went to Blinn one year. He would tell you it was because he loves playing football and was tired of sitting on the sidelines watching. If he transferred to another D-I school he would have had to sit out another year. He claims that he just wanted to play football. According to his people he passed all his classes and finished out his last semester at Florida.
