Can someone shed some light on this idea that Newton is dumb?

Recommended Posts

I would say take it up with the sources you heard it from.

Leave race out of it

He did some dumb stuff in Gainesville but that was then so, meh

I'll take a "dumb" hard worker over a "smart" slacker any day. At this point the kid looks committed to make it happen no matter how many race/laptop/cheating stories you wannna throw at me.

Gabbert's wonderlic was originally erroneously reported. It was something like a 31, not a 42.

not that it matters but this is still largely unknown, because two reliable sources reported it differently. Mortensen was told be a team it was a 42. Gabbert, on the radio, said he didn't know his combine score yet but he got a 42 in a pre-test. Someone else later reported a 31.

not that it matters - either way, Gabbert was quite a bit above average.

As to the topic at hand, it's just ignorance. I don't think it is racially motivated for everyone, but it probably is for some. Hell, McNabb still takes hits for his intelligence, even practically from his own coaching staff.

Cam may be of "average intelligence" (and below average for a QB) by wonderlic standards but it's more important how he handles the pro football game. We'll have a better idea of that soon, but not soon enough!

Yeah most of the negative comments are obviously because he is black. Just because he talks the way he was raised to talk and doesn't use large words in the publics opinion "white and oreo mass media" they consider him dumb. Half or more of the members of the board probably have a deep country accent to Cam and I'm sure he isn't saying how dumb you guys are. Most of the stuff is based on the way he talks which doesn't mean anything for the most part.

I don't understand where this "the way he talks" business is coming from. He is one of the least ignorant SOUNDING football players I've ever heard. Want to hear dumb sounding, listen to a Vince Young interview. THAT guy is dumb. Proven by the trifecta of wonderlic, the way he talks/what he says, and how he acts (suicide watch, pouting, etc).

For those who might not be familiar with the word. Some think Cammy Cam made it up:rolleyes: The people that never met him and think he's dumb are very simplistic.;)

Wow....only took 4 posts for some fuging idiot to play the race card. Thanks for not letting any of us down. The major questions around his intellingence are probably related to:

1. Getting caught cheating multiple time....not that big of a deal to me.

2. Making the very poor decision concerning the laptop.

3. The continued discussion on how the Auburn offense was "simplistic". Whether this is true or not is debatable. Some want to believe that the Auburn offense was the way it was because of Newton, as opposed to just the fact that it is the offense that the HC and OC wanted to run.

Personally, I have made absolutely no judgements about his intelligence. We will see whether he has the work ethic and gray matter to learn and master an NFL offense. I hope and bet that he will.

Your points notwithstanding, it would be naive and "idiotic" to dismiss the race factor when considering reason behind some of these mean-spirited comments. Just b/c it's not a factor for you does not mean it's not a factor for others.

I think it has a lot to do with the way he speaks. He uses some slang. Says things like "cammy cam juice". Just because he doesn't speak like brady or manning doesn't mean he's dumb though. I never heard anything about his wonderlic anyone know how he scored?

:iagree:

This is something I've noticed. Cam doesn't express himself as well as others and can come off as rambling when trying to make a point. As you said, he isn't as well-spoken as Brady or Manning, but we shouldn't expect him to and his speaking ability or wonderlic score has little to do with his football intelligence IMO.

I'd be willing to wager 10% of it is based on his race alone .. yes i said it .. " They be hatin cause he be black mmhm "

Yep, I hate black people. Especially ones that get caught cheating on tests three times.

The more it gets brought up, the longer it remains a factor. The fact is that some people LIKE that its a factor. Some people just can't enter any discussion without thinking how they can spin race in there somewhere and that is not only aggravating but quite depressing.
