Awwww shucks. No one commented on my idea, perhaps because it was stupid, perhaps it was over looked.

Essentially I doubt we keep Davis once his contract is up unless we go crazy and the cap is lifted. Considering the amount we have tied up in the offense, the extension that Beason will be getting and the money tied into people such as Gamble I just do not see the $$$ being available to re-sign Davis to the contract he will probably feel he deserves.

Thus could Connor be the replacement for Davis?

He's signed through 2010, while Beason is signed through 2012. Gamble is signed through 2014, Harris is signed through 2013, Marshall through 2010, Johnson through 2011, kemo through 2011, Lewis through 2011.

You'll see Lewis, kemo and Marshall go before Davis.

Gamble's salary is 3.25 in 2010, 6.2 in 2011, 6.75 in 2012, 7.95 in 2013, 8.85 in 2014.

The WILL needs to have stronger coverage skills than the SAM. The SAM may be called upon to cover the TE, but in most cases the WILL is the faster of the two and will drop off into coverage. The SAM needs to be bigger to shed blocks on the strong side and get to the RB/QB...

Zone coverage and man coverage are two different things. I did not specify that his weakness of man coverage so I understand what you are saying but with Connor, IIRC, he really excelled at zone coverage in college having several INTs from dropping back. Man coverage is completely different and that is where he struggles. With that being said, I also agree with snake-fist-gung-fu that his coverage skills can be coached up some and he will eventually become a starter based largely on his instincts that are amazing.

Looking at the 2010 free agents with the Panthers I don't see this being a problem. Delhomme will be extended at some point in 2009 if not within the next couple of weeks. Moore will get his biggest offer from the Panthers. Bridges, McCown and Goings are all really non-issues. That only leaves Marshall who I'm not sure the team will want to keep at this point. There should be enough money under a salary cap to get a deal done. If they absolutely can't reach a deal, Davis would be the only player that year I could see them using the franchise tag on so if need be that would be an option as well.

I completely agree, I don't see how we let him walk in 2010.

Do you think the he is fast enough to play on the outside? In training camp he appeared to have a slower first step.

He is no Derick Brook thats for sure but I guess we will never know till he gets a start. Maybe they will play him at SLB in pre-season but I doubt it. He more then likely will be manning the Mike.
