Travel through Europe

If he has any questions about Amsterdam he's welcome to get in contact with me. I've been living here for about a year.

I also know a little about London, so I might able to help a bit there too.

For the record, I'm not much of a night-life person, per se.

How old is he, btw?

He's 17 now, but will be 18 when he takes his trip next summer.

Yeah. We've already discussed Amsterdam. lol

Another thing. He's trying to travel as cheaply as possible. He's budgeted $5000. Is that gonna be enough?

If he's hostelling, it should be enough (and tell him to check into CouchSurfing). Especially if he sticks to RyanAir and EasyJet. And if he has a choice between RyanAir and EasyJet, pick EasyJet 100 percent of the time.

I definitely disagree with Happy Panther and the Eurail pass. Some of those trainrides are ridiculously long and the convenience of flying definitely beats sitting on the train for 8 hours. And I'm not even sure that he'd be saving any money. I think the Eurail passes are incredibly over priced. For example, after my semster in England, my friends and I went from London to Amsterdam to Berlin to Venice to Rome and then back to London for about 250 US dollars flying EasyJet. You can't beat that with the Eurail pass. I paid 15 pounds for my flight from London to Amsterdam.

Oh, and he can't go to England without making a stop in Brighton. It's an hours trainride from London-Victoria (I think 19 pounds round trip) and one of the neatest cities I've ever had the privilege of visiting. Right on the coast of southern England so there's ocean and the weather is incredible this time of year. The nightlife is ridiculous.

Besides Dublin, Cork is a great city in Ireland and definitely worth a trip if he can budget the time. I think a flight from Dublin to Cork on RyanAir is like 9 Euros or something.

Don't know much about Scotland. Wish I would have made it there. Some of my friends went and had a blast in Edinburgh.

Trains go everywhere though. And you don't have to set up an itinerary. Just depends on where you want to go. When i went there was no way we could have flown to all the cities we wanted. And we would show up at the trains station and pick a destination.

$250 is a good deal for a 5 stop round trip flight. I've never seen anything like that even on easyjet. I'm tempted to call BS

Brighton is a great city but with a huge drug culture. Very hip

Here's the confirmation e-mail I got from easyJet regarding some of my flights. The flight to Venice and return trip to Gatwick were added later. By today's conversion rate, 122 pounds is 197 dollars. The flight from Venice to Rome was about 10 euros and the return to Gatwick was about 30. What reason would I have to make this stuff up? You can plainly see, though, that London-Amsterdam-Berlin-Rome was 122 pounds. Try beating that on a train.

And I'm not suggesting that he'd be able to fly everywhere he wanted to go. I mentioned visiting Brighton--there's no airport in Brighton. That's why I said he'd have to take the train from London for about 20 pounds round trip. You can still get off significantly cheaper by flying. Not to mention the amount of time you waste sitting on the train. It took my friends 8 hours to get to Edinburgh by train. You can fly there in an hour and a half from London for much cheaper. The only benefit of a train as I can see it would be an overnight train so you don't have to worry about paying for accommodations.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
