With No Football in 2011..Who's 1st in 2012

Recommended Posts

Some of you are being far to modest with the amount of picks we could get for trading Luck. (Those of you who spoke a specific amount of return) If Luck has a better year this up-coming season, if he wins a national championship, if he wins the Heisman, and there's a potential rookie-cap, this trade better be historical! I would say the bidding starts with a combination of the Ricky Williams trade and the Herschel Walker trade. It should also have effects on drafts up to three years or more. Why? The QB position is the most important position in all of football. With a great QB, your team is almost guranteed to win 10 games every year, and are in the playoffs on a consistent basis.

With all that said, assuming Luck has another phenomenal year, the Panthers would be stupid to trade him. If a team is willing to bet all that on this guy, then we should go ahead and select him ourselves without having to give the motherload for him. Let Cam and Luck battle it out, and the loser will be traded. (And don't tell me there won't be trading value for the loser. Kevin Kolb is not necessarily a gold nugget in the ground, but desperate teams will be willing to give up a lot for him)

I hope there is football, and there is a new CBA with a rookie cap this year. And if Cam proves himself worthy, then we build around him. If we are dead last in football again, we should take Luck hands down, and let the boys battle it out.

^^^ with all due respect, I think your logic is flawed. I honestly don't think bringing in Luck to battle it out is a great idea. Trade the #1 for a ridiculous amount of picks, and put a top-tier prospect in at 4 or more positions. Pick the best CB available, the best WR, whatever you want to do. I was a huge Luck guy, went to many Stanford games last year and will probably go to a few this year, but Cam is my boy now. We gave him the keys. That shitty feeling Matt Moore got when we drafted picklenuts, and then the shitty feeling Jimmy got when we drafted Cam, we don't need to do that to Cam too. I'm all for competition, but drafting qb again is not the way to go. Nope, get all these teams in a bidding war and get 4 or more high picks and get Cam some weapons. I wanted Luck, but fug him now. This is Cam's team for better or worse now for at least the next 3-4 years.

I honestly think we'll have football this year, and won't miss any games... I also think Cam will be fine...

BUT... As long as we're playing the 'what if' game, let's play it this way...

There IS football this year... Clausen starts the season as a starter and goes 1-3 out of the gate before being replaced by Newton... Newton comes in and struggles, as many rookie QB's do... He has a completion % of around 50%, has 15 picks to 6 passing TDs and 4 Rushing TD's... His rating is among the bottom few QBs in the league, and he's 2-8 as a starter before missing the final 2 games with an injury typical of the type rushing QBs suffer (sprained ankle, twisted knee, concussion, nothing overly serious like an ACL tear)... The Panthers finish 3-13, show little to no growth from last season and end up with the 1st pick again...

NOW what do you do?

This is the best post I've read in this "fantasy" thread.

Well we have 3 choices... We can beat the hell out of the 2010 season again. or haggle over our draft picks that are pretty much beaten dead.:beatdeadhorse5:

OR

We could discuss the current issue of the CBA, But no one post anything significant about it... probably because there isn't anything significant happening.... which leads to......

Talking about the future or "Fantasy" as you so eloquently describe it. And since NO ONE knows whether, TD will come back full strength, D Will will re-sign or Cam Newton will take us to the promiseland. WE can only speculate or Fantasize.

Please feel free to come up with your own fantasy POST!!!! :ciappa:

Or go back and beat that dead horse just a tad bit more.

And of course this is a WHAT IF scenario. Right now my WHAT IF looks more POSSIBLE then Playing football in 2011.

To answer the OP ... This goes one of three ways.

1) We draft Luck and let him and Cam battle it out best QB wins. Nothing wrong with this option in my mind. 3 or 4 years down they will still have trade value. Especially in a Brees Rivers type situation.

2) We draft a DL/DE pass rushing run stopping monster. I mean someone like the next Peppers, Bruce Smith, etc...

3) We trade the pick and get as much as we can. I do not see this happening to our advantage since I think Hurney is a complete moron. I honestly only hope they do this if they get the bank for this pick. With what Atlanta did for thier pick I would say we should get at least that with maybe another 2nd rounder in there.

Drafting Luck or Trading the pick. If you draft Luck we lose a chunk in draft picks. If you trade the pick you could possibly get 2 - 1st rounders, 2 - 2nd Rounders and no telling what else. If you trade AFTER the draft you won't get anywhere near the value. They put a ton of effort into making sure that Newton was our pick. If they didn't think he was the man we would have traded out the pick or gone with Darius or Peterson or Even Green.

If we traded out the pick we probably would have access to a rushing/run stopper monster.

I just don't see us wasting an opportunity to upgrade the already good talent we have around Newton and Beason.

If there is no football in 2011 then there is no guarantee there even will be a draft going forward. From what I read the antitrust lawsuits are trying to make everyone a free agent, free to sign with whoever they want. That would include guys coming out of college as well.

Plus there will be fan revolt like there was in baseball when they went on strike. I just can't see it not being resolved. Too much money to lose for everyone.

That will NEVER happen. You have to remember that there are special rules for sports and no other sport is TOTAL Free Agent. It won't happen and if it did the league would surely loose 1/2 of its teams.

Teams cannot hold exclusive rights on a player for their entire careers but the draft is an acceptable practice. AND IT WON'T Change.

If the lockout is lifted then they will probably resort to 2010 rules.

Stop believing everything you read.... 1/2 of it comes from unreliable sources.

Don't get your underoos in a wad, Dave. The "fantasy" referred to was drafting Andrew Luck with a hypothetical #1 pick in 2012. If you go back and re-read my entire post, you'd find that we actually agree based on what you posted above.

Let's face it....the Panthers would look totally incompetent spending high draft picks on QBs three years in a row. I just don't see it happening. Not too mention the FO would be wasting months of in-depth research, scouting, and other resources to start all over again the following year. It makes more sense in this scenario to trade the hypothetical #1 pick for multiple picks in 2012/2013 to add build a championship caliber team and give Newton more talent to be successful. I have no problems with the speculative discussions. However, those who still think we'll get Luck after he turned down a golden opportunity to be our franchise QB in this draft are living in a "fantasy world". JMHO

4.5 QBs in 3 years...yay! We know what we are doing! Say, anybody want to join the Panthers?

this wouldn't really be so surprising considering a QB makes or breaks a franchise..

with that said, I'm sure we'll try to take a crapload of picks over drafting Luck.. if we do that, I hope like hell Newton steps up in a big way.

Apparently there are a bunch of lawyers on the player's side who disagree with you.

BTW: would your post be on the side that is considered reliable or not?? Which half should I believe??

Just wondering............

I will take the 75plus years this league has operated as a foundation over a couple money hungry, fame seeking lawyers.

Interested in making a wager that when all is said and done there will be a draft?
