With No Football in 2011..Who's 1st in 2012

Recommended Posts

Plllllleeeeaaaaaasssse..... enough with the Andrew Luck talk.

If for some reason we dont have football this year... And we get the #1 pick again, we would sit back and wait for the offers... seeing as it would NOT be a lockout year, Carolina would entertain a number of player/draft pick package scenarios and select the best option to build a team around the core that we already have.

So what if Andrew Luck is the next Peyton Manning? Peyton only has 1 ring. Teams win championships... and with that scenario, Carolina could put together the pieces we need to be serious contenders.

Cam is our guy... get over it.

:iagree: This is the best post I've read in this "fantasy" thread.

The Panthers would look totally incompetent if they took a QB three years in a row and JR/Hurney/Rivera are not idiots. IF we're fortunate enough to have the #1 pick again in 2012, it's the perfect opportunity to trade the pick to the highest bidder and build a championship caliber team with multiple draft picks in 2012/2013. It's a no-brainer. Andrew Luck had a chance to be our franchise QB and #1 pick and he passed (can't say I blame him)....let's move on!

You bring out an interesting point... Andrew Luck passed on coming out early with the KNOWLEDGE that Carolina was holding the #1 pick... and he decided not to come out. And Im not saying that he didnt come out because of Carolina... but what Im saying is that I've seen interviews where Cam Newton has said he wanted to be a Panther. Cam is from Georgia. His family is close by and He wanted to be here. Im not so sure that Andrew Luck feels the same way.

Primetime and the Icon ... choppin it up.

Primetime: "You smell the cologne Im wearing?"

:cam: : "Huh? No."

Prime: The Cologne Im wearing... do you smell it? Its called confidence. I wear it everyday.

:cam: : "Thats cool"

Prime: "You have that same scent."

:cam: : "Smell good dont it."

CLASSIC!

The question in the OP assumes NO football this year, which would also mean no camps, practice, preseason, season, postseason... Nothing... In essence, there would be absolutely no way to guage what we have in Newton, nor any way to guage any progress he's made with the playbook... If Carolina is sitting at #1 during next year's draft for this reason, we have to assume the lockout is still going on when the draft comes around... This would mean that no trades could be discussed for existing players on the roster... It'll also mean that Newton is NOT under contract... There will only be an ASSUMED rookie cap, the same as this year, which will diminish the value of the #1 overall pick... Not greatly, but a bit... That being said, here's the way I see it...

I don't feel, and never have felt, that our team is as un-talented as some of the experts like to imply... They show they don't make it to the channel Carolina plays on too often... No, we didn't have a good season, but (ASSUMING THINGS STAY STATUS QUO) we have 2 Pro-Bowl caliber linemen and one that can reach that level if he's healthy... We have 2 of the best RB's in the league... We have one of the best WR's in the league, and several young guys learning... Our LB corps is solid... Our CB's are solid (this assumes Marshall is unable to leave due to the CBA), and have some nice young talent that has been added recently... We have some nice DE's, albeit not stars... We have addressed the DTs, but could use a high pick there possibly... We could use Safety help...

We HAVE talent... But it's YOUNG talent, and inconsistent play along the OL and at the QB position left us unable to score with any consistency... That doesn't mean that the talent is suddenly missing... It means the coaching staff couldn't bring it all together... As young as we are, it's possible no coaching staff could... It's possible Clausen played the best he could... Perhaps not... Either way, the inconsistency at his position is the reason for our 2-14 campaign...

So, I say that, to say this...

If (and it's a big if assuming all that would have to happen to get us to the #1 pick next year too) we are sitting at #1 next year, IMHO selecting Luck to come in, compete with Cam, and the best man win would be the best move... Then address our second most pressing need (whether it be WR, DT or DB) with the 33rd pick, which we would have back... Having both Cam and Luck on the roster wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have happen...

And as long as we're assuming, we're also assuming that Luck doesn't return to school once he see's the Panthers have the #1 pick again...

Dude, I hear you, and I agree - he IS our guy now. That still doesn't change the fact that had Luck entered the draft this year there is no way Cam Newton would have even been considered.

Good point. I would rather have a guy that wants to be here and appears ready to step up to the challenge of being a franchise QB. Irregardless of his talent, Luck apparently felt he wasn't ready for that this year. Again, I'm not mad at Luck for choosing to stay in school, but "it is what it is" (shout out to John Fox). Luck has moved on and so should our fans IMO.

Although he's the better prospect, Luck apparently felt he wasn't ready for that this year. Whether he made his choice to avoid playing in Carolina is anyone's guess. And if we had a time machine, instead of selecting Jeno James in the 6th round with the 182 pick we would have selected Tom Brady...

I like Andrew Luck... And I think he wouldve made a great QB for us. But I feel the same way about Cam Newton.

And the more I see of Cam... the more Im convinced that we made the right decision. Andrew Luck will be a great QB, unless he has a Jake Locker type of season... but He's not Cam. Compare their numbers.... theres a reason that Cam won the Heisman over him. Theres a reason that Auburn won a National Championship.

If that happens, you without a doubt sit back and entertain offers from QB needed teams, and take the offer from whoever sacrifices the most. The reality is Cam is the guy thats the way it is, just because he hasnt been paid yet doesnt mean hes not already and investment from a mental/emotional standpoint. Far as the draft, for starters your talkin at least two first round picks in next years draft because Andrew Luck is worth that, and you have extra picks for that current draft. Trade and take the best player and continue to build this team with the rest of those high picks. That scenario gets me WAY more excited than drafting Andrew Luck on this team. We would be the Patriots of the NFC instantly with way more talent and if Cam turns out to be great.

I didn't take that into account , but regardless would that not mean luck would have a slight lean in the qb battle , since with last years rookie scale cam will make a butt ton of money while luck would have a much smaller contract ?

Depends on whether or not Cam's contract also ends up coming under the rookie salary cap, but assuming Cam got a Bradford-type deal and Luck gets a rookie cap deal, from a financial standpoint you'd have to be rooting for Luck to win the job, but honestly I think the Panthers would go with the best QB regardless of the $.

In the UNLIKELY event of no 2011 season, we WILL have the #1 choice and i have no doubt if Luck were available he would be the selection, Because if that were the case Newton wouldn't have proven anything yet and would not have a contract at all. That said you want to succeed and Luck is the far and away superior prospect you keep him and deal Newton in this scenario.
