With No Football in 2011..Who's 1st in 2012

Recommended Posts

If we are the number 1 overall next year and Luck is out and he proves himself again this year in college and with a new coach, you take him. You worry about what to do with them afterwards.

Only time you don't take him is if you find a team willing to go Atlanta Falcons and give up even more to go get him.

We have made a commitment that Cam Newton will be our franchise QB. I think IF there is no football in 2011 we will trade that pick away but the price tag will give Carolina more picks in the 2012 and 2013 draft. These picks will (as someone stated before) give Hurney all the picks he needs to give Newton talent to protect him and produce for him and solidify the defense to top 5 capablities.

I would start with High Caliber CB.

IF there is no football in 2012, meaning Carolina would again have the 1st pick in the 2012 NFL Draft....there are some things to consider:

1) The ONLY reason Cam Newton was even considered, and taken, this past draft was because Carolina lost its shot at drafting Andrew Luck with his announcing his intent to remain in school his final year.

+ CONSIDERATION: "To Quarterback or NOT to Quarterback?!"

With the 1st pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and Andrew Luck (assuming he is as good as everyone says he is) sitting there, how confidant are 'you'/Carolina NOW with the idea of Cam Newton being Carolina's franchise QB?! Again, Luck is supposed to be the next Peyton Manning, and the only reason Cam Newton was a consideration for the #1 pick was because Luck was not in the draft....

2) If you hold the #1 pick in the draft with Andrew Luck sitting there waiting to be drafted, your team suddenly becomes the hottest team in the NFL in regards to <TRADE> discussions!

+ CONSIDERATION: The bidding STARTS at what Atlanta gave up this year to draft their prized WR.

If Luck plays well again this year and is described/discussed/considered to be the QB PHENOM everyone considered him to be this year...I would have a hard time passing him up. I didn't say it would be impossible, but it would be hard. Can you imagine turning him down and then him becoming the 'next Peyton Manning' while Cam...well, even if he became the next Eli Manning. :(

Then again, getting compensation for that pick in the form of multiple picks next year and at least the other team's 1st rnd pick the following year as well would help make it easier.

The top 2 players on my draft board going into next year, though - whether we have the #1 pick or not - are Andrew Luck and Alshon Jeffries, WR - Univ of SC! With Newton in the fold, I might have to make Jeffries a Panther!

Alshon Jeffery ( why do people keep saying jeffries -insert expletive here!-) is the pick , may be the only wide receiver I will ever say is worth #1 overall .. 0 character issues, steve smith like work ethic , handles his business of making DB's look stupid with modesty. Blackmon is good , but the strength of schedule , and fact that south carolina ran more than oklahoma state did factors here.

He's not even the consensus #1 WR.

He's not even the consensus #1 WR.

He was easily the best wide receiver in the country this year he lost to blackmon in voting for reasons mentioned in my last post.. I'd like to know 2 better than him for next year .. the only name i'm familiar with aside from blackmon is floyd from notre dame?

To note .. Cam was the # 4 or 5 consensus QB in this draft? We drafted him purely based on upside and character .. consensus apparently doesn't matter as much as it may have in past drafts.

I agree to a point, but QB is an entirely different animal.

If we stay at 1 we have to take Luck, but we would be foolish not to trade out and pick up a skew of picks.

?

I would take Eli's whole career just for the SB win, if Cam turns out like Eli and brings us one trophy I will be happy.

Plllllleeeeaaaaaasssse..... enough with the Andrew Luck talk.

If for some reason we dont have football this year... And we get the #1 pick again, we would sit back and wait for the offers... seeing as it would NOT be a lockout year, Carolina would entertain a number of player/draft pick package scenarios and select the best option to build a team around the core that we already have.

So what if Andrew Luck is the next Peyton Manning? Peyton only has 1 ring. Teams win championships... and with that scenario, Carolina could put together the pieces we need to be serious contenders.

Cam is our guy... get over it.
