Agent: Tutoring of Cam Newton could be done by Brett Favre

I like what I am reading about Cam's dedication. Answers the question about whether Newton is going to be another Jamarcus Russell.

As for Favre mentoring Newton, has he ever done that before? I don't remember his doing much for Rodgers although give how good Rodgers has become maybe he did....

Yeah, It reads kind of screwy. The ultimate source of the suggestion would seem to be Buckner, but the title would make you think it's the agent's idea.

So when are the "Favre to Carolina to backup and mentor Cam" rumors going to start?

I seriously doubt Favre is going to expend significant energy in trying to help Cam Newton or his career. That guy is among the most self-absorbed athletes I have had the pleasure of being sick of. Though if he can give him some pointers on professionalism, earning and keeping the respect of the locker room, or how to take care of your body over the course of a season, I'm sure Newton would do well to take notes.

Favre or no, Newton is, by multiple reports, diving into the playbook head first. I have read accounts that he was similarly dedicated to getting up to speed in Malzahn's Auburn offense when he arrived there. One thing is that Malzahn's offense is far more gimmicky than I suspect Chudzinski's will be. I would definitely call it innovative, in that there are scores of little tricks to keep LB's and safeties off-balance, and to control their movement to open up running lanes and downfield passing (though this element seems to be implemented far more towards the end of the season, and maybe implemented specifically to utilize Newton's newfound comfort and talents). I doubt that the vast majority of that stuff will fly in the least in the NFL. However, Chudzinski's description of his "offensive philosophy" in panthers.com videos from a couple months back implies a similar desire to dictate the movement of as many elements of the defense as possible, and to then exploit the matchups that that movement creates. Definitely a point of continuity for Cam in that respect.

I am way more impressed by his development over the course of the season at Auburn after having watched (so far) 8 games than I thought I would be. Cam Newton on September 9th against Mississippi St. is a totally different player than Cam Newton just 2 months later on November 13th against Georgia. His performance against Georgia is basically flawless, and his burden in the passing game is clearly so much greater. Georgia being a talented, mean, physical defense, by the way. I don't know if he can replicate that ridiculously fast development with the Panthers or not, but even if he can make the same strides over twice as long of a time (let's say 4 months instead of 2), any doubts about his value at the #1 pick are going to melt away in a hurry.

there is no FA QB that could be brought in as a mentor who could offer newton anything close to what favre can.

I completely disagree...and think that Favre mentoring Cam is a terrible idea.

Favre has proven to be an incredible diva. His decision making has always been questionable....he is a gun slinger...he forces throws into double and triple coverage.

During his career, he had the arm and tools to make it work. But, that is NOT what you want a young QB to learn.

I think people are reading too much into this

of course Favre would like his name in the news again

of course Bus would speak favorably about his two clients working together

of course the two QB's have met before at some point or another and exchanged pleasantries akin to "hey call me maybe we can workout sometime"

in the media this translates into:

Favre has stated that he would be interested in taking Cam Newton under his wing

Bus Cook asks what could be better than for the two to work together and as soon as Favre schedule frees up the likelihood is NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION

The two have already met about this and mutually agreed that there is a Possibility

I wouldn't want Favre tutoring anyone. He's as fundamentally unsound as they come- it worked for him, but mechanics are actually important, so is decision making.

Agents have no business making these sorts of decisions/assessments anyway.
