NFL to close up shop?

Recommended Posts

The exact same thing was said over and over again about the union decertifying. And it happened. I would not have thought this before the union actually decertified but now, yeah, I completely believe they will do exactly this.

The union had the public sympathy and support at the time, they could afford to pull that stunt. I'll be honest, I didn't think it would get to decertification, but it did.

That being said, I could be wrong about this, but I really don't see the owners pulling this stunt. Union decertifacation has been done before, but the NFL "closing down" would be unprecedented.

Also, if they close down it would be the first time since the AFL-NFL days that there could be an alternative league that is successful. They do this, and I guarantee there will be another group of billionaires starting their own league. But the difference between this new league and the XFL, is there will be premier, elite talent to fill that league, with the NFL being "closed for business".

The main reason the owners opted out of the CBA is the renegotiation of the CBS/ FOX/NBC contracts for 2012. Since 2/3 of the league's revenue comes from TV, and with ratings high enough to justify a MAJOR increase, ANY % reduction to the players will mean millions of dollars per team for the owners. As such , not only can the owners not risk losing this season, but they cannot risk a reduction in ratings, which could happen the longer the impasse continues.

Look for all the huffing and puffing to continue until training camp, when a new agreement will be reached.

Someone on here said they heard this quite awhile back and they were told it would never happen. No possible way at all, ever. Who would that have been?

Didn't "hear it", but theorized the possibility of it a while back.

It is indeed the 'nuclear option' but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.

Courts can force you to do a lot of things, but they have no power to prevent anyone from going out of business if that's what they choose to do. And yeah, it might sound ridiculous, but it's not like the guys making the decisions need the money.

If the NFL decided they'd rather take their ball and go home, nobody could stop them.

First, the players have never had the support of the fans or the general public. Pole after pole showed either a support for the owners or a dislike for both sides. That being said, none of this is about public opinion and public opinion is not going to impact any of these decissions on either side. The only public opinion that matters to both the owners and the players is their greed of everything NFL. And based on the recent draft that uncontrolable greed is just as strong as ever (although not growing). The rational thinking on both the owners and players sides is only getting complicated by the greed of the fans. But I will get off my soapbox on that for now.

Secondly, this type of decertification is not presidented. The NFLPA didn't do this because they were fighting for a cause but rather as a ploy in order to not have to bargain and instead litigate. If, and I will give you that it is a big if, the NFL closes down it is because they feel they have been forced into this position by the NFLPA. Just because something has never happened before doesn't mean it won't happened especially when someone feels like they are being forced into a situation.

Lastly, there is a reason the NFL is as popular as it is and while the talent is a reason it is really a very small part of it. Great business, marketing and the absolute greed of the fans of wanting more and more of anything with the NFL shield on it is whats makes the NFL. Let's face it, the majority of fans on this site represent the more informed section of the fan base and these same fans are already willing to buy jerseys of a player that hasn't even played in the NFL yet. The talent has nothing to do with it. It's the NFL's ability to maket the system and process of the NFL that makes a player with no experience as a pro such a major draw and gets fans willing to buy tickets and jerseys right out of the gate. That just doesn't happen in baseball and the reason the NFL and NBA have passed MLB as America's games.

I've said this many times on here. I don't think either side is greedy and understand each sides position and why they have done what they have done. I don't see the players as overpaid employees or the owners as old greedy aristrocates. I do tend to side with the owners but it isn't because I think the players are wrong for their actions. It's because the owners are the real decission makers and IMO the owners want what I want and the player's representation doesn't.

If the NFL does this, I'm sure it won't be as simple as simply going out of business. It would almost definitely be some sort of suspension of business in which all contracts are still valid and where business can be re-started once things get worked out (perhaps a postponement in order to re-structure the NFL model or something similar). There is no way the owners would want to forever disband the NFL, they would just want leverage and to protect themselves.

As for the idea that someone (or some group of people) would simply jump in to fill the void by starting a new league (or even a UFL expansion), that is not a realistic option at all. First of all, the expense of starting a new league (particularly on the scale of the NFL) would be massive, and would take years to implement. It would probably take a couple of years just to come up with a business plan alone, not to mention the additional time it would take to work out contracts, set up vendors, stadium agreements, advertising, TV contracts, etc...even the UFL doesn't have the capacity to do anything on this scale right now.

On top of that, there would likely be some legal wrangling going on that would hold up many things such as finding stadiums to use and TV contracts. By the time any alternative options presented itself, the players would have long given in. Frankly, the vast majority might not even be able to withstand a short lockout, let alone sitting around for years waiting.

TBH the NFL does not make most owners all that much money. Most of them have the teams because they love the game. They make the most money by selling there franchise. So if the Union wins all the court battles I would not be surprised if they owners say "well it was a good run while it lasted" and cut there losses. Also everyone assumes that some one would start another league but don't be sure about that because Players want too much money and any new league would still have to deal with the Union.

This is a worst case scenario but its quite possible. If the owners are going into the red there is no reason to stay open. D.Smith want care either way because he gets payed no matter what and his lawyer friends will make billions off of anti-trust suits.

If they do this, I'm seriously out. I can go watch more movies or something and wait for hockey and basketball to come back. The NFL is awesome, but it's more or less gotten this big because it become synonymous with drinking, chicken wings, and taunting opposing fans. I swear to God I will go tailgate Avatar 2 and talk smack to Tyler Perry fans. DO NOT TEST MY RESOLVE!!!

LOL. On a Monday morning, this is awesome lol. I needed that laugh man. Thanks lol.
