Running Plays for Newton

Newton will be joining a team in the Carolina Panthers that had six different people attempt passes in 2010, and none of them did it particularly well. The Panthers finished last or near last in most relevant passing categories, which is why Newton was their top pick just one year after they selected quarterback Jimmy Clausen(notes) in the second round. Clausen’s three-touchdown, nine-interception season was one of the reasons Newton will be replacing him, but one of the few plays in which wide receiver Armanti Edwards(notes) – a quarterback in college – found the field could indicate how Newton might be used in certain types of plays.

Obviously the author made mistakes and used pretty flatline reasoning, but what about the premise that Newton will have a package heavily focused on option passing and running. Do you agree or disagree? I don't think we will put him in running situations often. If he runs, it will be because the play broke down or the defense left a big hole to run through. I could definitely see roll-outs and motion.

Thoughts?

This is exactly how Cam should be introduced as a rookie. Why put everything on him shoulders? Why not simplify the playbook a little, and add in some plays that he can try to execute using his legs?

This is the perfect way to get him adjusted. Start small, and build up as he gains experience. Cam is going to have to make some plays with his feet. I foresee a lot of bootlegs, plays set up where Cam can bootleg to the right and choose between trying to scramble for some yards or passing to a receiver.

I do want him to take snaps under center though, and get adjusted to that and making believable play action plays. Play action is where Cam can really get some good yards, because the defense will have to think of three key things: either DWill is going to break a run, Cam is going to break a run, or Cam is going to throw the ball down field. It is just an added dimension that the opposing defense will have to take into account.

Yes.....yes....

I just think he is an idiot because he is using last years offense in his reasoning. Rivera has said this is how they will use him and I agree with that. But for the author to use Armanti Edwards two attempts in a lame mountaineer package last year as the premise to his theory is idiotic.
