Mount & Blade

I picked this up the other day(M&B: Warband) and have been glued to it. It's a cool sandbox-type RPG set in a fictional medieval setting. The combat is really great. You basically go around recruiting warriors to build an 'army'(the biggest I've gotten so far is 30) and fight other 'armies'. There are kings and eventually you want to become a vassal or a king yourself. The graphics are crappy, the UI is crappy, the gameplay is awesome.

I've played this game quite a bit even before the warband expansion. Once you become a vassal you can start getting your own castles and towns to pay taxes and station troops. If the king pisses you off enough (giving away a castle to another vassal even though you took the castle) you can tell him to piss off and become a rogue nation. Swadia has the best cavalry, Vaegirs the best archers, and Nords the best infantry. Nord infantry takes forever to level to the highest level it can reach. Khergit is a pain to fight as nearly all their units are cavalry archers and just run away from you. A good way to make some money early on is to enter tournaments at the castles. The homeland of the castle will determine what type of weapons you'll be using in the tournament. The combat is addictive but your right about the graphics, several years behind the times.

Yeah I've just been winging it and learning by trial and error. I became a vassal of the Rhodoks and got 2 castles and 1 town. We went to war with Swadia and by that time I had an army of 100 top tier soldiers and went nuts capturing castles. I got pissed when all my castles were given to other people so I decided to take one anyway and didn't realize I was creating my own kingdom(I was just planning to fight for another faction). Needless to say, they were pretty pissed and came after me hard. Soon after another faction declared war on me(I had previously pissed them off robbing some towns) but I was able to fend them all off. Now I'm in an odd situation bordering 4 different factions, at war with 2, and finding it hard to expand. I do have the Rhodoks' king as a prisoner though, not sure what to do with him.

So I've been reading up a good bit and I think I screwed myself. I don't really want to abandon my game but I'll probably have to start over. The strategy in this game is really deep.

I've been checking out some of the mods too. This game is fuging kick ass.
