The Panthers All-Drafted Team

Recommended Posts

So I was taking a look at the Panther's roster and noticed that we currently have 11 defensive backs on the team and 10 of them were drafted by the Panthers. Only Marcus Hudson came to the team via a way not the draft. So that got me interested in looking at the entire team and what I discovered kind of amazed me.

We currently have 48 drafted players on roster. And enough at every position to fill out a 53 man roster except for punter, kicker and long snapper. That's right, we have, except for ST players, enough drafted players to make up an entire NFL team, starters and backups.

Here's the list of drafted players:

QB - Clausen/Newton/Pike

RB - Goodson/Stewart/Williams

FB - Fiammetta

TE - Barnidge/King/Rosario

WR - Edwards/Gettis/LeFall/Pilares/Smith

T - Gross/Otah/Schwartz/Ziemba

C - Kalil/Williams

G - Bernadeau/Robinson/Wharton

DE - Brown/Hardy/Johnson/Taylor

DT - Fua/Hayde/Irvin/McClain

LB - Anderson/Beason/Connor/Davis/Norwood/Wilson

CB - Hogan/Gamble/Marshall/McClain/Munnerlyn/Stanford/Wilson

S - Godfrey/Martin/Pugh

Now, I'm not saying everyone on that list needs to make the team or that we don't need to add any free agents. Just found it to be very interesting how many draft picks we actually have on roster.

hopefully rivera is changing that philosophy.

i think he already is.

i know richardson is planning on having those purse strings open up when FA starts. I don't think that hurney is under the delusion that we don't need outsiders to have a winning team anymore.

i think we'll be pretty big players in FA this year. vet QB, vet WR, DT, OG, and probably CB are areas we will probably hit hard.

i'd love for us also to quit thinking we need to have a FG guy and a KOS guy. save a roster spot and replace kasay and lloyd with one guy who can do both.

meant to quote you but, I do agree, although they did move the kickoff up 5 yards so either baker or kasay will probably have no problems doing kickoffs next year.

I totally agree with you except for the Kasay part. He is pretty reliable and I don't see how one more roster spot being used by a KO guy is gonna realistically make a difference on whether we are competitive or not. Lloyd needs to step it up or get replaced.

With the change in KO position, Lloyd is out the door, methinks. Baker can kick off from the 35 and get good coverage.

How often do the perennial superbowl franchises make a big splash in free agency?

I do remember hearing on NFLN during the draft that the Panther indeed had the most number of drafted players on roster in 2010. There isn't a list out there with this info readily available so I didn't do this for every team but here is what I did find out.

Out of 53 roster spots:

Panthers - 40

Packers - 38

Broncos - 20

Steelers - 29

Ravens - 29

Bengals - 29

Patriots - 32

Bills - 27

I think that pretty much proves that this is just an interesting stat that doesn't mean that much as far as on field performance is concerned.

Interesting, but my point was how often do they make BIG moves. When was the last time the Steelers made a big money free agency signing, or traded for someone other than dealing with late round picks?

The Pats recently made one big singing, Adalius Thomas, and have essentially steered clear since then. Other than that, they have stuck to older players and low risk trades.

    • It didn’t feel like we’re the Bills bc we’re not a consistent conference contender yet we’re a rebuilding team. But with the game on the line we played just like the Bills went straight down the field and scored a tuddy then converted a 2pt conversion I have to give credit where credit is due. And the chiefs played us like we were the Bills in an AFC championship game, drive down the field and kicked a walk off FG to win at the end very similar to me. Are saying our defense stunk yesterday? Vs an elite offense team with elite coaching an elite QB man idk what you want them to do. KC does these things to the best defenses in the league consistently to win AFC chips and Super Bowls let’s not devalue who they are. I saw us play KC to the wire and barely lose defense did its thing as much as it could. Bingo!!! We’re also forgetting how injured we’ve been defensively this year, yes we need to build up the D but adding a few pieces and D Browns successful rehab should make us a very strong unit again. Couple that with the offense we saw yesterday and we’re winning our division.
    • Canales deserves a lot of credit. I'm very pleased. He's definitely making strides with Bryce. I also think some of his lack of commitment to Bryce as the starter is to motivate Bryce. I think he liked what he saw when Bryce was benched.  Even the Defense looks tremendously better with just a couple more pieces getting healthy. Wonnum has made our pass rush viable again.  I would love to see this team with one more good player across the defensive front, DT or an edge rusher.
    • I didn’t see any limitations yesterday
