Clausen isn't 'real' competition for Newton

I think the biggest difference between Jimmy last season and Cam this season is this.

Everyone on the team was used to having Jake as their leader. He was respectable, had no problems with anyone, and ran the offense like it was his.

Jimmy comes in, a young guy who's a bit high on himself, but the players around him don't show any sign of respect. They're used to Jake, this guy's a loser, etc etc.

Now that the team knows how sh*tty QBs can be, I think they will give a lot more to Cam. They will respect him and work with him well, just because it's not Jimmy.

Man, it's hard as hell to explain what I'm trying to say... But maybe someone will understand it.

Jake seems like a good option. Maybe the best option.

Moore wants to play. He is still young enough to try for a starting position somewhere. Anyone who signs here has to know that Cam is going to be the guy, whether week 1, week 9, or next year. The same applies to someone like Vince Young.

The guys who are a bit older, like Garrard, would have even less incentive. At that age, you have maybe 3 or 4 more years to contribute, so the only way they would do it is if they were out of other options and were looking for a 1 year contract, with the hope to land somewhere else the following year.

So now you are down to the old guys who could still play in a pinch, but would be better relegated to a sideline coach type responsibility.

Okay, so given a choice between a Kerry Collins to fill the mentor role, and a Jake Delhomme, who do you choose? For me, it's a no-brainer.

Ooof! All this Jakey talk.

Alright, lemme toss in my thoughts.

A guy like Jake Delhomme could either the absolute worst mentor for Newton, or the best. It depends on Jake's ultimate role, and it's really chancy.

Let's start with what I would consider a worst case scenario. Neither Newton or Clausen are viable candidates for this reason or that (take your pick) and Jake has to start. If something like that happens, we're likely to see Jake do what he does best- throw a dumb INT and go into a mental/emotional meltdown that has him slamming his helmet on the ground like a 6 year old and losing all confidence, causing things to tailspin completely out of control. No young QB needs to be learning that!

The best case scenario would be that Delhomme never steps on the field and simply sticks close to Newton on the sidelines and in practice/training. Jake can keep his cool and think rationally and ultimately, impart that kind of attitude to Newton. Couple that with 'real world' kind of observations and advice and you've got a winner.

In other words, Delhomme's experience could be valuable. But his example could be disastrous.

Cancer? You're kidding right?

His play certainly declined, but he's the antithesis of a cancer.

No, he is a cancer. He's not a cancer in the form of his attitude...he's a cancer in what he brings. He can't play. Yet, I can guarantee we will have idiots who will try to argue that Delhomme should start and try to relive some memory from 2003. Honestly, Delhomme should be out of the league because he can't play anymore.

If we want to bring Delhomme in to "mentor" Newton, it better be as a coach.

As for the topic, I really wish we could find a decent veteran QB who wants to start. FA QB class sucks so bad though...

Yeah, a total exaggeration. And the explanation up there ^, well...

Aceman, I agree with what you're saying in the most general sense. I don't even want the slightest possibility of Jake ever playing a game for the Panthers again to exist.

But even I can admit that Jake's problem isn't that he's a terrible player. Instead, he is simply grossly inconsistent. And when you look across the length of his career and average things out, it's adds up to mediocre.

So yeah, Cancer is a little on the dramatic side, I think.

I like it that we have 3~4 relatively inexperienced QB's. None of them deserve to be considered the best, because none of them have earned it.

Its the EPITOME of a QB competition. The best man will win, and not a single one of us is certain who that will be.

It will come down to a rite of passage, the players will have a favorite, the coaches will have a favorite, and no one is entiteled to anything at all except their paycheck. Even that is at risk.

The real performance has to come from Mike Shula. His neck is on the line. He has three projects and a clean slate. Either he is totally worthless as a coach, or one of these QBs is going to be the ALPHA.

In my view if only one of them pans out of the three, that is still not a great track record.

Clausen gives us the best chance to win. mwahhahahahahaha

Is this based because he's already played a year? if so, I doubt it Clausen has to learn a new system, and still has mechanical problems he needs to improved.

And so does Newton, so a Vet would be better.

Bills fan here, hoping a few of you guys would take a minute to give an honest opinion on Matt Moore. The Bills are shy at least 2 QB's right now (some one would say more) - and the FA market has a long list of possibles as a backup, but all carry baggage of one type or another.

Moore looked good (statistically) in '09, but last year looked rough. I see that there were 8 sacks, 5 QB hits & 14 pressures in the 1st 2 games. How much of that was on Moore vs the OL vs the receivers?

A combo of ZERO run game, iffy OL play, and Moore. Moore isn't as bad as 2010 suggested in his brief play.

He would be a good #2 for Buffalo. He could step in and play some games at a fairly decent level. Drop off wouldn't be that big imo.
