Well, maybe not just a punter.

Forget who it was, but there was a young QB who wanted 17, and Jake Delhomme was willing to give it to him. "Just a number" was his philosophy too. But either the team or the league (I'm thinking the team) nixed the idea because it would have effectively made a bunch of already manufactured Delhomme jerseys worthless.

Not quite the same situation here, but the team would likely have to approve.
