Hey Boo (Kidney Stones)

I've seen these things bring a grown man to his knees. *praying i dont have to deal with it* What are they giving you Boo? hydrocodone?

Yes sir. Only thing that sucks is if you let the pain get ahead of you, it takes a while for these to kick in. So if you are already hurting when you take it, its gonna take about an hour to get you out of pain. Meanwhile the pain intensifies while you are waiting for the pk to kick in.

Horrible pain.

At least I'm getting a little taste of what giving birth will be like. yay?

This may be a dumb question but what causes the stones?

This is all based on what I have read. Honestly don't remember what they told me at the ER I was so fd up

Doctors do not always know what causes a stone to form. While certain foods may promote stone formation in people who are susceptible, scientists do not believe that eating any specific food causes stones to form in people who are not susceptible.

A person with a family history of kidney stones may be more likely to develop stones. Urinary tract infections, kidney disorders such as cystic kidney diseases, and certain metabolic disorders such as hyperparathyroidism are also linked to stone formation.

In addition, more than 70 percent of people with a rare hereditary disease called renal tubular acidosis develop kidney stones.

Cystinuria and hyperoxaluria are two other rare, inherited metabolic disorders that often cause kidney stones. In cystinuria, too much of the amino acid cystine, which does not dissolve in urine, is voided, leading to the formation of stones made of cystine. In patients with hyperoxaluria, the body produces too much oxalate, a salt. When the urine contains more oxalate than can be dissolved, the crystals settle out and form stones.

Hypercalciuria is inherited, and it may be the cause of stones in more than half of patients. Calcium is absorbed from food in excess and is lost into the urine. This high level of calcium in the urine causes crystals of calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate to form in the kidneys or elsewhere in the urinary tract.

Other causes of kidney stones are hyperuricosuria, which is a disorder of uric acid metabolism; gout; excess intake of vitamin D; urinary tract infections; and blockage of the urinary tract. Certain diuretics, commonly called water pills, and calcium-based antacids may increase the risk of forming kidney stones by increasing the amount of calcium in the urine.

Calcium oxalate stones may also form in people who have chronic inflammation of the bowel or who have had an intestinal bypass operation, or ostomy surgery. As mentioned earlier, struvite stones can form in people who have had a urinary tract infection. People who take the protease inhibitor indinavir, a medicine used to treat HIV infection, may also be at increased risk of developing kidney stones.

I have a history of kidney/bladder infections, so that makes sense.

Ive also heard drinking a lot of soda and dairy may lead to them.

yup, at least in childbirth they can hook you up with the good stuff. I'm sure you know this but if you mix that hydrocodone with a few beers and you'll really be feeling it.

Good to know. I think I've finally kicked my soda habit so I'm feeling good about that.

Calcium based antacids though, might have to cut back on those and start taking pepcid again.

Thanks Boo, and I really hope you feel better soon.

I've had countless stones. 2 lithotripsies, 1 lasered and another one that the stupid doctor tried a basket retrieval on and pushed it back into my kidney, ( freaking nightmare).

I've had every drug none and Diluad {sp} was easily the best hands down they could have removed stone by cutting me open and I wouldn't have cared.

It hurts when it moves in your kidney but the real pain is when it is traveling down the uretha , it has a tendency to get hung up and the uretha gets smaller as it gets closer to your bladder.

Good news is once it passes into your bladder pain is over of course you'll pee it out next and to me that ain't no big deal feels strange but not any real pain.

Just be careful drinking too much alcohol, if that sucker hangs up and puts you in the floor throwing up you'll be at the ER soon. ( no pain medicine you have will help) And I don't know if they'll be real quick to morphine ya up if they smell alcohol and you appear drunk.

Good Luck

THAT's the name of the stuff they gave me at the hospital! I couldn't remember it and kept saying demerol but I knew that wasn't it. O yeah, that was the only stuff that worked for me and it still took like 10 mins to reach my kidneys. The first stuff she gave me was nothing. It made my head feel awesome but I was still in pain.
