Auburn Playbook

This came from an article posted in another thread, but I thought it was very interesting since they put up a scan from a page of Auburn's playbook:

Now, I've never played football at any level so please feel free to correct me, but that doesn't look as "simple" as I had expected based on what all the "experts" are saying.

this link was posted in another thread but relevant to this (although this thread could be merged with the other discussion about newton's "simple" offense.

start listening at about :42 or :43 to get talk about the system.

looks pretty typical to a standard offense.. so I would agree, doesn't appear overly simplified..

broken lines are coverage reads. so if the corner is playing tight, the receiver will go deep. if they drop back, they'll run in. the qb and the wr have to be on the same page, ie laptops had to see the same thing his receiver did.

This.

Notice how only one route changes per play ?

It is my understanding that all the WR spots have that in the NFL.

That is why you see passes to no where sometimes. The WR or the QB didn't read correctly.

Chizik even mentioned Lee Ziemba as having a great NFL career!

not necessarily.

what it means to me is that on those plays he was the only read. IE he's got two chances, stare right at him, if he doesn't get open take off.

like, look at trips right 32.

your two slot receivers basically run clear out routs to take away the corner and safety. came is right handed so that's where he'd naturally run if he took off. those two inside trips receivers cleared out a path. all cam has to do is beat a DE trying to contain the edge or run over a corner who doesn't have a chance to tackle him.

well that would finally make sense where the one read comes in.. referring to 1 route that may change depending on coverage. totally different from what most people comprehend as one read/no progressions.

however, I find it interesting no analysts/experts/fans/etc have ever pointed that out or explained in full.. makes me question if that was ever their understanding as well.

the vast majority of people aren't interested in breaking down plays. they prefer invented controversies.

    • If you think Smith's hating on McMillian or tall recievers you didn't watch the video. He may have been guilty of that in the past but he says outright that his problem is people see a tall reciever and tend to overlook everything else about him. He was complimentary and believes the guy will pan out. His only real criticism was comparing Tetairoa to himself actually, saying like he felt like he took plays off when he wasn't the primary target.
    • I loved this draft. I think we have 3 starters out our first three picks. Maybe they take a year to develop but I don’t see them taking long.    I think Etiene is going to be a good back up. He’s only 20 so he has a lot to improve on.  I think we will see him be used on special teams this year. He won’t get many reps unless an injury happens because we got two 1,000 yard rb in front of him. I could see Ransom starting but I think he will probably be a back up, maybe playing special teams? I think hes probably got the lowest ceiling of all our drafted players. Cam Jackson will be a back up, probably not a lot of snaps this year. Could end up being a solid player for us.   I love the Mitchell Evans pick. He’s got potential to be our top TE. He had two different injuries that set him back in college but I think if he was healthy he would have been one of the top TE in the draft. I have even more faith in him because ND makes great tight ends. I don’t know if he will play much this year unless an injury happens though. Probably just a blocking TE this year.
