QBs who have won the heisman in the NFL.

Recommended Posts

Instead of lumping Cam Newton in with every heisman-winning QB ever, (since guys like Chris Weinke, Jason White, and Troy Smith were clearly considered to be franchise guys, what with being picked late in the draft and all.) lets see what kind of company he has if you only consider QBs who won the heisman and were then drafted #1 overall.

Sam Bradford

Carson Palmer

Vinny Testaverde

Jim Pluncket

Angelo Bertelli

Yep Cam is gonna suck it's official.

what I read:

"instead of considering the entire sample because that would mean I'd see that the Heisman means nothing about NFL success, I'm going toss out any player that really disagrees with my logic!"

reality is this... the Heisman doesn't mean poo when it comes to the NFL. It's a great award for the college players and it shows how dominant Cam was in college last season but it really doesn't tell us a goddamn thing on if he'll be awesome or a bust in the NFL.

Believe it or not that was part of the point I was trying to make.

But no, it is dumb as hell to compare Cam to Troy Smith just because they both won the heisman trophy. Smith was drafted in the 5th round and Cam was drafted #1 overall. The expectations for those two players are completely different. It's not fair to use Smith to show the heisman QBs bomb in the NFL when no one ever realistically expected him to be a franchise QB in the first place.

the expectations for Smith (by his dedicated fans) were that he would be a star. but like someone has said before me, winning a Heisman doesnt matter with NFL stardom, it's a college award for a reason, guys like Bush won the award and hasnt done much in the pros, BUT that doesnt mean winning a Heisman makes you a bust. Bradford played well and so did Palmer. So i dont look at the Heisman win as a bust or boom type of deal.

plain and simple college success won't tell us how he's going to be in the NFL and it will always be chaotic process.

But what he's doing isn't illogical cherry picking. It's a fair comparison. It just doesn't really mean anything.

sorry but leaving out Ware and Leinart to make a point is cherry picking..

So too is deciding that certain players weren't drafted to be franchise guys just because of where they were drafted (IMO coaches seemed pretty confident in Weinke but hell maybe I'm wrong)

if we go with just #1s, then sure, not every QB drafted #1 who has won a Heisman has been terrible but... so what? The Heisman tells you nothing...
