Newton on Mike & Mike

No I got what he meant. They kept the names of the plays limited to a number, hell they do that in the NFL with the wristbands and they call a number from the sidelines. But he never called checks, protection calls, hot routes, made progession reads in the pocket, and barely audibled (if ever). None of it. That makes it a simple offense. So he needs to quit defending it and get over it. It doesn't mean he can't learn it, he just hasn't yet. If he means that the offense is simplistic then he should say that. But if he means that the number system was simplistic then say that instead. Otherwise it sounds like backtracking. Which is why he should talk less. Less room for criticism and distraction in the media. He's got enough of that, and more important things to do.
he didn't have to. a lot of those things are done because of what they see the defense doing, but in that offense the defense barely had time to get set up for the next play. no time to read the offense, change personnel, or react to the offensive formation.

they were by no means simple with the formations that they used. malzahn used a ton of them to screw with defenses. he also used a lot of movement presnap.

the names of the plays were purposely made to be quick to get to the QB so he could get everyone lined up quickly and the ball snapped in a just a couple seconds. instead of having an offense react to what the defense was doing, they forced the defense to rather react to what the offense was doing. pretty much what rivera wants to do anyway.

people get too hung up on whether the plays were simple. they and the playcalling/gameplanning were innovative and effective.

I think that's exactly the problem. They are getting too hung up on it. It seems like Cam feels like he can salvage something or change minds by saying it was more complex than it probably was for him to run the offense. In reality, until he gets on the field and has some success in the NFL, he will always have doubters. He just needs to let it go, is all im saying.

typically when the offense is moving around, the defense is as well, so that would actually complicate reading the defense further..

could be a situation where this topic is moot because one aspect may seem simple, but complicates another..

I haven't seen Auburn play much, so I don't know how relevant that is to what actually occurred on the field..

I do know Cam saw a VERY NFL-like defense at the start of the NC game.. Oregon came out with the intention to do what a lot of NFL defenses started doing THIS year (a la Packers, Steelers, etc) where they wouldn't show a formation, all players were moving around.. You typically see more exotic blitzes, with no idea from which direction.

Oh and btw Cam is definitely getting better with the whole public speaking thing. Props for a really damn good interview.

I'm really warming up to him. Saying the right things...I'm hoping it translates. Get pumped!!
