Hurney: Hey Cam, Ziemba is still on the board in the 7th... would you feel safe behind him on the NFL level?

Cam: He should have been selected in the 3rd. This guy protected my blindside all season. Please pull the trigger.

(This is not an actual conversation, just my interpretation of what happened)

So we can expect a fine for the Panthers organization for communicating with a player during the lockout?

1 - Cam Newton, QB, Auburn (6-5, 248)

- "Player with the biggest chance of being a success and the player with the biggest chance of being a bust." -- Todd McShay, ESPN

3- Terrell McClain, DT, South Florida (6-2, 297)

- "Space Eater" -- Coack Ron Rivera. Better than any DT we have on the roster ATT.

3 - Sione Fua, DT, Stanford (6-1, 308)

- "Space Eater" -- Coack Ron Rivera. Chance to make an immediate impact.

4 - Brandon Hogan, CB, West Virginia (5-10, 192)

- Off-the-field troubled CB in the midst of rehabbing an ACL torn on 4 December; target date to 'return' = sometime in August. Talent, attitude, & contribution TBD.

5 - Kealoha Pilares, WR, Hawaii (5-10, 199)

- Great stats, as Hawaii WRs have, could be a steal but torn PCL MIGHT require surgery. Good potential.

6 - Lawrence Wilson, OLB, Connecticut (6-1, 229)

- Fast LB who has to be protected from the 'trash'; possibility of moving to SS; back-up material

6 - Zack Williams, C, Washington State (6-3, 309)

- back-up material or practice squad player

7 - Lee Ziemba, OT, Auburn (6-6, 317)

- could be another steal, should become versatile back-up

3- Terrell McClain, DT, South Florida (6-2, 297);

3 - Sione Fua, DT, Stanford (6-1, 308);

4 - Brandon Hogan, CB, West Virginia (5-10, 192);

5 - Kealoha Pilares, WR, Hawaii (5-10, 199);

7 - Lee Ziemba, OT, Auburn (6-6, 317)

Cam Newton - Unlimited potential.

Terrell McClain - Big, hulking DT...should be a good fit.

Sione Fua - VERY excited about him. Non-stop motor.

Brandon Hogan - Not worried about character issues. Very athletic.

Kealoha Pilares - Bad pick, IMO. Dwayne Harris was on the board and is a much better slot receiver. 2nd best WR on Hawaii...:confused:

Lawrence Wilson - Don't know anything about him..

Zack Williams - Good value in the 6th.

Lee Ziemba - Eventual starter for us.

1. Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

He can bring positive energy and be a leader to the team. I do not think he will be amazing his first season but maybe in a few years.

3. Terrell McClain, DT, S. Florida

I think he can start right away. He is strong and phyiscal and can pressure the elite quarterbacks in the divison.

3. Sione Fua, DT, Stanford

Hopefully will be able to stop the run like he did in college. Bring more depth to the DT position.

4. Brandon Hogan, CB, W. Virginia

Bring more depth to this young secondary. Very athletic.

5. Kealoha Pilares, WR, Hawaii

Someone that can fill the slot. Add a weapon for whoever the quarterback is.

6. Lawrence Wilson, OLB, Connecticut

The outside linebackers last year were not productive. Maybe can bring an impact right away.

6. Zack Williams, C/G, Washington State

Bring depth to the OL and can play either Center or Guard.

7. Lee Ziemba, OT, Aurburn

More depth to the OL like above. Motivate Cam Newton.

1 - Cam Newton, QB, Auburn (6-5, 248);

Who really knows, the upside is great, but huge chance for bust also.

3- Terrell McClain, DT, South Florida (6-2, 297);

Solid guy, will provide good minutes; with good chance to be good starter.

3 - Sione Fua, DT, Stanford (6-1, 308);

Another solid pick, neither third rounders were eye popping, but filled need.

4 - Brandon Hogan, CB, West Virginia (5-10, 192);

Character concerns worry me, and he's injured. Don't want to become the bucs and Bengals. Other than that he's got talent.

5 - Kealoha Pilares, WR, Hawaii (5-10, 199);

I know some like the pick. I don't; almost everything I've read on him says this was a reach, plus he's injured also

6 - Lawrence Wilson, OLB, Connecticut (6-1, 229);

Solid pick for position, provide special team help and chance to become solid starter.

6 - Zack Williams, C, Washington State (6-3, 309);

Practice squad, seemed like something of a reach.

7 - Lee Ziemba, OT, Auburn (6-6, 317)

Perhaps the best pick of the Panthers in terms of value and need. Should be a guard early, and could become a tackle later in career.

One thing that did impress me with this class of players is that the Panther drafted a lot of guys who people that at least I respected think could be starters in the NFL, and fairly quickly. Newton, McClain, Fua, Hogan, Pilares (as a starter at the slot) and Ziemba (as a starter at guard). The other two picks Williams (primary backup center/jack of all trades) and Wilson (special team ace) serve major roles as well. The major question with most of these guys is how good can they end up being as they have high floors but relatively low ceilings. Except for Newton and Hogan, the two players at more high profile positions, they took major risks on. Smart way to draft IMO...if it works out...

    • Yeah, this is the least talented defense in franchise history. Hard to beat him up that badly.
    • Some very rosy takes for a backup RB in his first NFL game versus an elite rushing defense.  I damn sure hope that you guys are right.
