HDMI = high def video+digital audio built into one.

Use HDMI if you wanna use less cables.

By digital audio i can imagine you mean optical audio cables. Which would mean you need a separate cable for both video and audio, and since hdmi is used for the video anyway, might as well use the hdmi.

now if you're trying to use a receiver without hdmi, then you need to use optical.
