Jimmy Question

Mods may deem this unfit for the Huddle but I wanted to start a thread about it anyway.

So before the draft I was pretty meh on Newton- neither for nor against him. In these last two days my opinion has radically changed. Whether it was the assurance vote from Hurney and Rivera, the great presser today, or maybe the article of him with the Big Cat, I am sold. 100 percent ready for him to become the face of our franchise.

My question comes down to Jimmy. Now while I love to rag on Jimmy because he is such an easy target and played so terribly last year, I don't think he quite got his fair shake. Terrible coaching decisions (multiple reports that Fox didn't help Clausen out at all), injuries to key offensive players, and a low team morale killed Jimmy's chances of having a decent shot. I still think he can be a serviceable if not a pretty good qb in this league, if put into the right situation. Clearly, however, that situation probably is not here.

Now don't get me wrong, I would love a little competition at the QB spot, but how long does that last for? Do we sit Cam all year, does he start day 1, week 8? Idk that's Chud and Rivera's call. I do know, however, that the future is in Newton not with Clausen. Clausen can be a decent qb, he will never have the charisma and likability Cam has.

So do you think we are going to actively shop Clausen once this lockout is lifted, or will we wait until this upcoming season ends and see how things shake out? Either way I see us bringing in a vet for insurance, and trying to get Pike on the practice squad.

Abridged Version for "Tl;Dr Crowd": Cam is the future, we have too much invested in him and he has too much potential to be our Manning. Jimmy didn't get a fair chance: should we trade him or keep him around?

what say you huddle? I could see a couple teams taking a risk on him for a 5th rounder?

Also Hurney's comments today assured that he believes the future is with Cam. I just really see this being a Chris Harris type situation. We know he is gone, we are just waiting to see what we can get for him.

I don't see us getting anything for him this year. I am also of the opinion that Cam should sit for most/all of this season.

With that said, what I would like to see is, let Jimmy start this season if he can win the job. Hopefully, he can build up some trade value with some decent play. Then we may be able to get something worthwhile for him. (Hell, the Browns got the Madden cover boy for Jimmy Sr.)

We won't get a plum nickle for James Hezekiah Clausen this year. Best case scenario is he starts this year and does a decent/good job while Cam grows on the bench. We trade and start Cam next year. We won't get what we spent on him unless he shows something this year.

I hope and pray its a Vick/Kolb type of situation. I don't think it is, but I can dream can't I?

This is the second time for Vick, first it was Matt Schaub in Atl until they raped the Texans, now there's a similar situation with Vick in Philly. Personally it's a position I'd love to be in in the next couple of years.

Shula really has his work cut out for him.

Something interesting from the article about JR and Cam was how Cam asked JR how Jimmy would feel about the Panthers drafting him. If that's a guy that's only interested in his paycheck, why would he bring up something that could possibly cast the decision to draft him in a negative light? Speaks of high character, in my opinion. Doesn't seem like the sort of thing that could even be faking or told to say, it's so out of left field.

I can't wait to see Cam scramble out of the pocket and roast the hell out of someone. That guy is going to be a terror in the open field. In any given game, the QB will find himself scrambling several times, with plenty of open field to gain if he isn't caught from behind. That's where Cam will earn his paycheck early on.

As for Jimmy, he looked ok against teams with slow secondaries. He might end up being one of those QBs who just can't make enough big plays to justify a starting spot. I don't think he's anywhere near his peak, but once I see Cam scramble, I won't give a damn.

I think it's all pretty clear given what Rivera has said.

The job is up for grabs between the two.

And we don't know what we're going to see out of Clausen in the coming months. After several months to reflect, working on things behind the scenes, and just maturing a little bit, he may be a totally different player. Couple that with a (hopefully) healthy offensive line and backfield, and who knows.

He could also end up making a fool of himself all over again.

I don't see a lot of currency in Clausen as is, so I think a trade is off the table almost entirely. Plus, we have a hell of a lot more currency in the likes of Steve Smith or one of our running backs if we really want to deal.

Even if we did try to trade away Clausen, the return is likely to be negligible.

Until he realizes this isn't college and he gets blasted by a LB or Safety.

Have to agree he will need to pick and chose when he runs out of the pocket. But I think he will be smart about it. Also the first thing he needs to remember is sliding isnt a bad thing.
