Panthers beef up D-line...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—When Ron Rivera started going through last season’s game tape after taking over as coach of the Carolina Panthers, the most alarming thing he saw was the play of the defensive tackles trying to stop the run.

The Panthers spent the second day of the NFL draft Friday exclusively shoring up that position, taking defensive tackles Terrell McClain of South Florida and Sione Fua of Stanford with their two third-round choices.

“The thing that gives you the biggest edge is to play downhill, to make plays at the point of attack. I didn’t feel that was something we did well,” Rivera said. “One thing I didn’t like was the linebackers were playing sideways and backwards.

“I felt that this gives them an opportunity to attack the line of scrimmage and make plays.”

Rivera sees the 6-foot-1, 307-pound Fua as a “space eating” run-stopper, while he’s banking on the 6-2, 297-pound McClain to be more of a pass rusher.
