JR 'Puts Newton on the Clock'

So, what's up with the clock?

If you ever spent any time at a grandparent's or great-grandparent's house as a kid, you probably remember that they had just a couple of clocks in the house, usually analog.

And these clocks, often times, were LOUD AS HELL! Their ticking sounded as if there was a tiny, angy man living inside of it banging on a wood block.

And if it was one of those stand-up grandfather clock things, every quarter hour the damned thing would go, "BLING-BLONG, BLING-BLONG!"

It's probably kinda like that.

Either that or it's an extremely rare antique clock made from the hollow bones of cute animals slain by Genghis Khan. He's got the money for that kind of stuff, ya know.

the whole "I want to play for the Panthers, not get drafted #1 overall" thing made me do a double take.

edit:

The first question Newton asked was about the clock. The second was about Jimmy Clausen. Clausen became Carolina's starting quarterback as a rookie last season.

"How will Jimmy Clausen feel if you draft me?" Newton asked.

"He will handle it like a gentleman and he will compete as hard as he can," Richardson said.

man, wow.

man this is the best Panthers piece I've read in a long time. major props to the observer.

so your argument is "Sorensen wouldn't have told us the truth anyway so it's not accurate"?

Not exactly. In spite of my obvious cynicism, I won't go so far to say it's a pile of bologna.

I believe that Sorensen gave us the bright and shiny here. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that everything that he reported actually happened. But I'd also bet that the picture, as a whole, probably wasn't quite as heartwarming or down-home-perfect as portrayed.

As I said, I've written a few pieces of fluff before, and the trick is to accurately describe the best stuff about what you're reporting on while conveniently leaving out any observations that might be considered unflattering to the subjects. In this case, the subject in question would be Richardson.

I won't lie to you. This point of view is largely based on assumption and I'm not trying to say that I think Richardson practices voodoo or gropes old ladies. In fact, I'm not trying to say anything about him personally. I just think Sorensen made sure the article was flattering in an effort to help him continue to get access to Richardson, who at times can be elusive to the press.

Makes for a damn good story, though. I admit.
