What QB would you like to have backup Cam Newton?

How many of you would be in favor of bringing back Jake Delhomme to mentor Cam Newton, as long as he never saw the field and didn't mind getting paid the absolute minimum? He'd have to get cut from the Browns, which I would find likely considering he's making a pretty penny over there...not sure if the Panthers are still paying him either.

I wouldn't mind this QB lineup:

#1 - Cam Newton

#2 - Matt Moore

#3 - Jake Delhomme

Now that Cam Newton has arrived and has essentially been crowned the new king in Carolina, what QB would you most prefer to backup Cam as he goes through "the process"?

I'm voting Matt Moore - at least we know he's capable of winning a few games, and he's not pickles.

Ummm, the question should be, "Which QB do you want Cam Newton backing up until Newton is ready to step in as the starter?"

Newton isn't ready to start for Carolina yet, and if he gets forced onto the field before he is ready he won't be any better than Clausen.

As far as Moore goes, he had his chance, he didn't do well, and he was gone (or should have been) the moment he got hurt last year. He is an undrafted FA who is not the calibre of back-up, starter, or mentor Carolina needs. Carolina needs to bring in a Veteran QB while Schula works with and develops both Clausen and Newton.

I love Jake but that chapter in Panthers history is over.

Maybe. But he also might be the best option out there. McNabb won't come here. He still thinks he is elite and wil want to play for a contender. I think he will end up in Minny.

Hasselbeck is a WCO QB with a weak arm. Maybe not the best fit for our offense.

Marc Bulger is rumored to already have a deal in place in Arizono (I think).

At the end of the day Jake may be the best option.

However, I agree with you that Jake's ship has sailed.

My personal belief is that the Panthers are going to go to camp with Clausen, Cam, and maybe Moore (if the RFA holds up)

Either Moore or another vet that can be signed for fairly cheap.

I feel Clausen deserves a good chance to compete somewhere, since he sure as hell won't be able to beat Cam for the starting job, even if he technically does beat him for the job. Not really his fault, but most fans, and probably people in the organization, feel Cam gives us a better shot to win.

I'm opposed to Delhomme coming back here, even in a mentor role.

Nothing against him personally... I like the guy as a figure from our history. But there are two things which could be bad for us.

1. A large section of the fanbase would call for him to be the starter, regardless of his ability to play. This would cause serious pressure on Rivera and if he acted on it, it could prove disasterous.

2. He might actually have to play. I certainly don't hate Delhomme... but the guy is done. He should retire. I would say a 1-day contract to get him to retire a Panther should be the extent of our future interactions with him.

From a skill set, McNabb would be perfect.

His history tells us that he may have a problem with the mentor role and may demand to be the starter for however long he is here. Would just have to cross your fingers and hope he changes his tune and settles down with a less than prominent role. I can see the Skins' trading him. I doubt he wants to remain a Redskin after the way Shanny humiliated him last year.

Somone mentioned in another thread not too long ago something along the lines of:

Newton needs a good mentor more than anything and sometimes the best mentors weren't necessarily the best players themselves. The thing is if we do this, Moore is as good as gone imo. Clausen still has plenty of time to develop, but I think a guy like Todd Collins, McNabb, or hell maybe even Kyle Boller makes sense

Clausen 1

Newton 2

Pennington 3

I like this the best. I think Pennington might be done as a QB in the league, but he would be a great mentor/player coach to Clausen and Newton. I don't know if Newton will be ready to start or not when football starts back, and it largely depends on the lockout situation. If not, I think Clausen could be the starter for a while or the whole season if he performs well. If he does a good job, let him start while Newton learns the offense and trade him to the highest bidder in the off season. If he does bad, bring in Newton and let him learn from experience.
