What if Clausen wins??

amusingly, Cam's aren't all that much bigger.. both have under 10 inch mitts which isn't so good. Cam's are big enough that it shouldn't be a concern, but then again...

Jimmy's hands were never his problem.

You're kidding yourself. Sadly, Clausen's days are numbered. It doesn't matter what he does on the field, they're paying Newton too much money to sit on the bench - and they won't get any value back for him if they trade him.

Clausen just has to recognise this and try to impress potential suitors with his play this year. He's not going to be in Carolina for much longer.

I disagree totally, while the money is there, money isn't what forces you to start a #1 guy alone. They'll let Newton sit for a year if we're winning with a different quarterback. Obviously, the major thing here is the "if Clausen does" part, because that is extremely unlikely, but the reality is that if Newton isn't ready to start at the beginning of the season and someone else is, and that someone wins with the team and keeps winning, Rivera isn't going to tank a potential post season run in his first year to get some playing time for Newton until we're out of the playoff hunt.

That being said, I doubt anything like that will happen.

His ability to fumble snap after snap has something to do with his girly hands.

His ability to fumble snap after snap was mental and trying to do too much at once. His hands didn't grow bigger as the season went on but he had an easier time handling snaps overall because he was *slightly* more settled.

Bradford has bigger hands and also had some fumbled snaps last year... it is not that uncommon of a rookie problem.

From a skillset perspective.

Newton is more like Vick than he is to Rivers.

The situation is more like a potential Brees/Rivers, though obviously not identical, not just due to the skill but also the circumstance. Just very very not like the Schaub situation to me, but eh, I suppose Newton is more like Vick than he is Rivers, but even then, I don't think Newton is really that much like Vick.

The offense will now have to be formed to fit Cam's skill set which doesn't bode well for Clausen. I am completely guessing, but I would think we would probably implement something similar to the style ATL ran with young Vick trying to put him in space to make throws instead of keeping him in the pocket. This is not where Clausen excels. The chances of him beating out Newton are slim to none.

we have a 900 page playbook.

they threw out a portion of it they decided wasn't something Cam could do (I wonder wtf those parts were), but added in some new stuff that they think he can do.

Clausen may not be able to execute that "added portion" but he will be capable of doing the vast majority of it - well, theoretically capable, lol. He'll have to start throwing down field of course.

I think the analogy is starter/backup, not who came first.

yeah, I get it, just don't think that Newton is really that much like Vick. He could really have the chance to be a superior passer early and I don't think it will be wise for him to run as often as Vick... would rather the Cammy Cam juice keep flowing and not get knocked out of games.

Certainly more like Vick than Rivers though. XD
