We do not need to be mortgaging our future again...

There's a difference between taking a risk and being a dumbass by giving away the future. Hurney straddled that line too much. We were in a win-now mentality. I think that's what led to the trading away of future picks.

This is why you don't let your coaches contract run out... too much "win now" mentality... that or "idgaf" mentality... I think Hurney had the former and Fox had the latter.

I agree with the OP that the premise and precedent of this sort of draft behavior make this argument almost indefensible, BUT, if the thinning of the roster of vets and the statement by JR that they were preparing for this Assumed this type of situation) we may be in a position to address FA after the draft based on cap room (LOL) and in essence have next years draft over the next few weeks rather than next year.

Risky? hell yes. But I think it may give us the jump we need now if it can be orchestrated correctly.

Move up and get a great DT..I say Marvin Austin

****** Nhamdi at quite the price maybe even throwing in late round picks from next year

Hopefully be one of the teams like Atlanta or NE that the pundits were claiming did not have HUGE needs to fill this draft.

just sayin' this is a weird year and we have lots of ground to make up.

I'm not so sure our future 2012 first rounder is worth it to get Marvin Austin.

I however would love to have Namdi.

This was my point in another thread... do not trade the #1 for any future year for a pick... if you're gonna trade it, trade it for a vet player in their prime, someone you KNOW is gonna come in and play.

We made a huge mistake last year by trading away our second round pick. The only logical way we trade into the 2nd round again is to trade away our first next year.

If we do that the whole Front Office of the Panthers needs to go ahead and quit.

Imagine us with a top 5 pick next year in the hands of another Team.

Say No to moving up into the second round.

We just mortgaged the future last night. What difference does it make now?

I agree. If you do not believe MA was a first rounder before he got tangled up with agents and suspended then I see the point.

However, I believe if he played this past year both he and Quinn may have gone top ten so I see it just as we played the Otah deal and say we are getting next year's first rounder a year early.

It's just a thought. Not sure I would have the balls to do it even if I was on the button but there is a way to manipulate all this mayhem to advantage if one gives it enough thought.

Coulda shoulda but I'm more pissed at the possibility of us being able to trade down and acquiring more picks if we had pick #33 and still get our guy.

UGHHH

Listening to ESPN right now talking about "what the Patriots plan to do with the first pick of the second round".

:banghead:

Im not a scout though and have never watched a UNC game before so you guys who have might have a better eye on the guy. Just my opinion.

beast, heart, motor

and I believe he is better now than he ever was at UNC. Yes I am a homer. I admit it. But the guy was coup recruit for Davis to start with and has taken on double teams consistently since he started as a true frosh. Strong as an ox and very fast.

He fugged up, embarrassed the program and paid a huge price but I am certain he will make serious waves wherever he gets picked tonight.

    • Man whether it's the Panthers or the Hornets it's crazy how many foolish talking heads there are in the local media. I just unsubscribed from locked on Hornets. Doug Branson with his cheesy mustache is an absolute clown especially when his partner isn't on. Talking about trading LaMelo because he can't win basketball games by himself with no semblance whatsoever of a legitimate Center. These YouTube personalities will say anything for a damn click.
    • I’m hoping for that exact same scenario, two seconds would be big for us. I’d hope for 3 impact players. A WR/DL/DE that can contribute like this current class would be key to our rebuild.
    • When I look at what I can find, a carryover problem from last season is our receivers are still unable to get enough separation on a consistent basis. Canales is certainly better at scheming them open, like how he sneaked out Thielen for a big play. But then he's also having Thielen running routes he frankly shouldn't be doing anymore. I feel part of the RZ issues is not really having anyone - after trading Diontae - who can make those quick cuts on a short field to give whoever is under center a wider window to throw. We also only have one guy with blazing speed in Thompkins and from what I could see, he's really used more to draw away coverage. I bring this all up because what Canales needs for sustained success - other than QB - is the other receiver pieces we'll be getting in the offseason.  Otherwise, I have to say that Canales isn't as afraid to be aggressive offensively. As others mentioned, still doesn't run the ball enough at times. Finally, I still feel his playcalls still doesn't line up with his mantra of getting rid of the ball within x amount of seconds. Maybe I count too slow. Oh, and I'm glad Canales first game after a bye looked good. I feared he'd be like Ron Rivera where we would fall flat on our faces.
