Trade Peppers for Matt Cassell?

Silly homer? Riiiight! Cassel has one decent season on a team FULL of talent and I'm a homer for thinking he's a one year wonder? Interesting.

What evidence do you have to think he's a one year wonder? Please explain it too me? So we fault a guy because his team is good? Sorry Montana, sorry Young, you guys sucked cause you had Jerry Rice? Get out of here with your madness! You have to take a leap of faith sometimes.

Dude, Cassel still needs development. You just said yourself that he's shown "flashes". If the Panthers can't develop QBs, why would getting Cassel be a good idea? Contradiction much?

Patriots have done all the work on him. He can play in the NFL, it's obvious, we've seen it. That's a huge step right there. What I'm saying is, if we don't get a QB like this, we'll either A) Get a mediocre QB or B) get a QB in the draft that doesn't pan out (like all of them we've gotten). You'd skip a step here. But it's cool, have fun with Jake, right?

The Panthers with Mike Mcoy didn't develop QBs.

Mike McCoy is gone.

True, so we have no idea what will happen. But the FO doesn't like drafting them either. It's still a matter of taking a chance. Maybe we need to take more (but not on the Redskins/Raiders level please).

this would be a monumentally dumb trade on the panthers part.

pats robbed of us a superbowl. not going to let the patsies rob us again.

only thing peppers goes for is big time defensive help or big draft picks (which will be used on defense).

cassell is not a possibility.

I'm not saying that Cassel = Tom Brady. I'm saying that Cassel is a bonafide starting QB in this league, and last I checked, only 1/3 of NFL teams can honestly claim the same thing.

As far as the Pats not being in the playoffs, they had the 3rd most IR'd players in the league last year, and actually had to sign a ton of linebackers toward the end of the year off the street just to field a team. Also, not sure if you guys know, but at one point the pats had their top THREE rbs injured for a stretch, and they put the game totally in Cassel's hands, and he flurished.

First of all, I don't see the Panthers having an interest in Cassell. Marty and John have stated that they intend to keep Jake under center. We were 12-4. Firing your quarterback for an awful playoff game is like the Chargers firing Marty Shottenheimer after losing a playoff game despite a 14-2 season - a mistake.

But the real reason this wouldn't work is that they aren't equivalent value.

Right now the market price for Peppers is a first round pick and two third round picks (based on the Allen deal).

If Peppers and Cassell were to be traded straight up, that implies that Cassell and Peppers are of roughly equivalent value. No team would give up a first round pick and two third round picks for Cassell.

I'd rather ship Peppers off for multiple draft picks and invest in shoring up the interior of our defensive line so we don't have to win games 33-30 anymore, but to each his own I guess. Since we're discussing giving someone a chance before we pass judgment, why not Scherer and Moore?

Moore couldn't get it done in PRESEASON. The coaches had so little faith in him, they got McCown and dropped Moore to the 3rd spot.

Oh, and unless we get rid of Fox, you'll be winning games 33-30 for along time.

Agreed. Anyone who thinks that even with Peppers they had a playoff caliber defense over the last half of the 2008 year is nutz.

Aaron Rodgers, Marc Bulger and Chad Pennington are all "bona fide starters" in the NFL.

I still wouldn't trade Julius Peppers for them.

I'd totally agree with that, if he had one bad game, but he had many many shaky games in the season, and it's been a roller coaster ride. I love Jake, his fire, but I also understand that he's not a franchise QB, and that he's not the best, but I think we'll do decent with him, but could do better, and that's what you should strive for.

Nice! I'm not saying Cassel can't play. But giving a guy a ton of money and give up a lot to get him when he cannot show you more than one year is not prudent IMO. Heck, he can't even pull out a college resume.
