Trade Peppers for Matt Cassell?

Fox/Hurney have a perfect track record of developing their 1st round picks into, at a bare minimum, solid long term starters.

I'll take my chances with that verses a one hit wonder free agent.

What's their track record on developing QBs?

Exactly.

I see everyone's argument, but getting a good franchise QB, even taking a chance on, is worth more than any other position we could "develop".

I still don't see it happening. Not until the Pats know for sure Brady is game, which, won't be until later on, and they'll still want Cassell for insurance. The Patriots, unlike us, realize QB is important, not coincidently, they have won a lot in the last 7 years because of this.

Cassell can't play in a John Fox offense. We don't throw to RBs and TE's much. Fox's offense is based off of running the ball and going downfield off the play action. Cassell struggled going downfield despite having the best deep guy in the league (Moss). He also imo has a lot of Carr's habits. When asked to look downfield he normally gives up and goes mobile if option 1 is immediately open.

Almost as bad as someone that only looks at ONE receiver the whole game, even forcing it into quadruple coverage. Oh wait....

Between Delhomme and Cassel, guess which QB targeted one receiver more than any other?

(I ran the numbers)

Take Delhomme out of the equation though and I still wouldn't make this trade. An established player (even with the questions) for a one year wonder in a friendly system? Not a chance :nonod:

The Pats will sucker someone into giving up something significant for Cassel, but I sure as he!! don't want it to be us.

I was going to point this out as well. Let’s hope Scherer can make a difference come whatever quarterbacks we have on the roster next season.

It’s not that I’m against making a move for Cassell, and I don’t think he’s entirely the product of a system, though I do think he benefits really well from coaching. But I just think there’s no denying Peppers is the better player at his position, and as such we would require not only Cassell but other picks or players.

See I think the Patriots would be nuts for doing this deal.

Cassell could have a huge future right now.

Peppers is a almost 30 year old DE that plays upon his speed, which will diminish each year in the 30's. He takes plays off, games off, years off. The way he handled the crap with us would also be out there, and his agent seems like a real prick (they all are though anyway).

I think people have a higher value on Peppers than he is really worth, and I think you guys are giving Cassell too low of a value. In the end, this trade won't happen though, why? The Patriots aren't stupid.

OR......as bad as someone who overexaggerates to make his case!!!111 :P

If this were a case of signing Cassel as a FA to a decent range contract, that is a possibility the FO could consider logically. But to involve Pep whose trade will likely fetch more needed things via draft picks is not a good idea in my book.

I can pretty much bet I am the only one on this board who has watched every snap of Cassel as a pro from his rookie year onward. I am not comfortable with a trade like that. It's not to say I don't think he has the tools to be decent/good elsewhere. It's to say I don't think he's worth that particular VALUE at this point.

Our passing game is predicated on play action and the deep pass. That's why Carr sucked here and why Cassell would be a poor fit.

Yeah? Did you see Cassell given the chance to do these things, and he failed? No. He did what the coaches wanted, what the gameplan was. Fault a guy before you even see if he can? Same people that diss QB's that do the spred in college that never were given the chance to be a true passer.

I don't know if Cassel could improve that part of his game with coaching, but it is VERY true that he was by FAR a better shotgun QB than he was from under center like play action requires.

I honestly wish I was "over-exaggerating" my point, but I'm not.
