Actually no, it couldn't.

The Panthers have never had anything against black quarterbacks. During the Fox era, they didn't like using first round picks on any quarterback - regardless of color - because Fox believed the bust rate was too high to be worth the risk.

Rivera disagrees, and they drafted Newton because they think he's the best available. Had he been white, it would have been no different.

Color never mattered to them before, and it doesn't now.
