If We Draft Cam, Should He Sit A Year

Oh no, we might have to cut a million dollars in salary while giving someone worse than that player we just cut $50million.

How are we ever going to recover from that $1million we just cut?

Are you always this dumb?

 it's too hard for you to keep from making personal attacks.

i just don't see any benefit to bringing in moore over keeping clausen.

we need a complete overhaul at QB. i don't want to keep any QB around that was here previously. if we are going to bother keeping anyone around, it should be one that we already have a contract with. even then, i don't see throwing away the $405k and whatever guaranteed money he's supposed to be due.

i know you are still pining for moore, but you've got to start letting go.

SF game.

Nope, that's not what I meant.

Having a very good backup is important in the NFL and Moore is AT LEAST that. We might not win that game if Carr isn't in the league anymore.

$3.5mil is not expensive for a quality backup QB.

But, if the league was becoming more quarterback friendly, wouldn't you think that everyone would be on board with the Panthers drafting Newton.

The league hasn't been friendly to the 3-10, Matt Stafford; or the 7-18, JaMarcus Russell. I think if anything the NFL is becoming for quarterback wary. The defensive players are only getting better and better, I mean Ndamunkong Suh and Gerald McCoy in 2010 then Von Miller and Patrick Peterson in 2011? Newton needs to be eased into the NFL like Aaron Rodgers (not sitting for that long though) and learn the ropes from a veteran before we hand him the reins of our team. There is no doubt in my mind that Newton needs to be starting by the end of the year, but he does NOT need to be starting on week 1.

newton's a polarizing figure. very few QBs would ever be considered a lock for a star QB and have everyone clamoring that he should be the #1 pick. newton is no different.

league is friendlier to QBs, but that isn't going to make everyone feel the same about someone like newton or much of anyone.

The Panthers should have a plan in place that Newton doesn't start a game until 2012 or maybe even 2013 if he doesn't get to go through training camp this year (still possible but unlikely now). There also should not be a competetion during training camp or during the season that includes Newton by default. This is the plan they use for all other signings, trades, cuts, ect.

With that said, plans change. The reason I believe the plan should be as stated is mainly to not put pressure on anyone, Newton, Rivera, Chud, Hurney, that Newton succeed earlier than his development dictates. That, his development, should be the number one concern, not playing time or trying to win games.

Should his development dictate he compete in training camp or start games in 2011 at any point so be it. But his price tag or where he is picked should not be a contributing factor. I understand the feeling that a #1 pick making that kind of money "better be on the field" but you have to also realise that drafting any player at #1 overall is an investment not a impluse buy.

yeah, thats pretty cheap...but i would just rather have someone else and start with a clean slate.

if we want a vet around it should probably be someone with a bit more to offer newton from a vet perspective. i would prefer it be someone with experience in the system as well.

the reason i would get him involved early is because it is an investment. that would also dictate what my expectations were for him as well as what i expect to see from him as he grows as a starter.

i wouldn't expect playoffs first year and i wouldn't even expect a >.500 season. i would expect to see growth, an ability to adapt to the pro game, his leadership in the huddle increase, and getting down the field and on the scoreboard. mistakes would be expected as would losses. the positives in his game would have to outweigh the negatives (which is why i had no problem getting off the clausen wagon).

Great, you can have that too. IF we draft Newton, there is literally 0 benefit to having Clausen affiliated with this franchise in any way, shape, or form.

Why give up the better, more proven player over a million dollars? Makes no sense.

we've already given up moore, though, haven't we? he doesn't have a contract.

moore might be more proven than clausen, but it's hard to find any vet with starting experience who isn't.

we can and should do better for a backup.

Moore has a contract offer on the table.

If Newton is drafted, I suspect Moore will not sign it and will be in Denver next year making roughly $4mil a year.

i haven't been paying attention to much of anything the past month or so. couldn't recall him having an offer on the table.

i can't see him being in denver, though. they are already set with orton and The Golden Calf of Bristol. moore would be the third wheel.

he'll end up somewhere, but i doubt it will be for $4mil/year. can't say i care, though. i don't have a dog in that fight like you do.
