Build a Cam Newton friendly offense

Listening to the talking heads now talking a about a building a Cam Newton friendly offense.Does that mean we go to the spread offense and have one play? I guess this will simplify our play calling.

I wouldn't think so.

My guess is that it would probably call for more work out of the shotgun (which I personally like), the addition of supplemental no huddle plays, bootlegs, and other things that would utilize Newton's skills.

I don't foresee them going towards anything resembling a spread/option offense, simply because at the NFL level, it's likely to lead to substantial injuries.

Defensive players in the NFL are just too strong and too fast for this to work effectively and can easily set up guys in skill positions to be utterly destroyed.

If anything, my guess would be that instead of simplifying the offense, their tailoring to Newton would actually add more to the playbook.

Plus, I don't see guys like Rivera or Hurney significantly overhauling their offensive plans for one player. If they choose Newton, it's because they believe that he'll be able to run what they give him.

That is how you fail. No great QB in the NFL has ever had the system made around him, they all fit into an existing system. If Cam can't run Chuds system as it is written, then he isn't the pick

You wouldnt necessarily build the offense around him, but you could put certain packages in that you wouldnt have with Clausen. With Cam, our red zone offense immediately is upgraded. Cam is so dangerous in it. I can see more screen plays and RB swing passes, along with the balls he throws deep so well.

This offense wont be built around him, but I think they will install something else to take advantage of his "talents." One thing is for sure, IF we draft Cam and re-sign DeAngelo - our running game becomes the best in the league!

A quarterback's best friend is a good offensive line and a good running game. As such minus the injuries last year, we already have an offense friendly to any quarterback. If Newton is the pick, there is no guarantee he is the starter so you surely wouldn't be building the offense around him. You would as was just mentioned, build packages and play for all three of your quarterbacks and a core set of plays that they all should be able to run. But no we won't be running a spread or run and shoot or other gimmicky offense.

But haters are going to hate and criticize no matter what so I for one will be ready for months of whining and complaining from the anti- Newton crowd.

Just because Auburn's OC calls plays by number doesn't mean his players are incapable of adapting to another system.

No reason to draft players to fit the rookie QB. Just make sure the rookie QB can fit the coaches' system. I think Chud will be just fine with Newton and the crew he's given. Sure wish he'd have Smitty too, though.

With cameron as the QB...we will likely play "Fox-Ball" again. keeping cameron managing the game with short throws while mostly handing the ball off to Stewart.

Please tell me NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I realize we will not win many games next year, but please try to make it interesting. If we get Cam, I hope they try to win, and not play not to lose.

Cam isn't unique in the fact he played in a spread and that there were a lot of simple concepts......and looking to the sideline for quick calls.

It is just fun for haters to act like no other highly drafted QB had any of that in college.

"Fox-Ball" would be a huge mistake with a guy like Newton under center and I don't think it's a mistake they'd make if they draft him.

Playing "Fox-Ball" with Cam Newton would be like hooking Secretariat up to a plow- ill-advised and counterproductive.

Rest assured that if they do take Newton like so many of us expect, they'll utilize what he's got.

The Eagles ran what looked like two totally different offenses last year. One when Kolb was playing and one when Vick was playing.

A good OC doesn't throw out the old playbook and create a whole new one, but a good OC definitely tweaks it maximize the talents of his QB (and all offensive weapons for that matter)

I'm sure if we draft him, unlike Fox did with Clausen, we'll make the offense as easy for him to be successful in as possible.

Thats what they did in St. Louis and, even without anything at WR, Sam Bradford had a good season. If we want Newton to come in and play immediately, and if we want him to be successful, Chud will have to tailor his offense to make it fit Newton right way.
