Why Hurney will trade down.

2. There is not one player in this draft worth guaranteeing 50 million + to. There is no rookie salary cap and there wasn't going to be one this year anyway. Remember everyone throwing a fit at Luck going back to school and saying 'this is his last shot at a big payday'? Can you imagine the fallout if we take Darius and we pay him that. We have just become the Raiders and fuged up the salary structure for every team in the NFL for DT's

/sigh

The same old "don't draft anything at #1 because you don't want to pay them QB money" rhetoric. Again, a DT at #1 will NOT make $50 mil guaranteed (most likely). All #1 draft pick contracts are not created equal (+mark up each year). When a QB is taken #1 overall, he gets a small increase over the QB taken #1 overall the year before (if there was one taken #1). See Bradford's increase over Stafford.

When Jake Long was taken #1, he got $57mil, $30mil guaranteed. Matt Ryan at #3 got $72mil, $35mil guaranteed. See how that works? QBs get more than non-QBs even if the non-QB was taken #1. And Long is a LT, that's not a low paying position. Offensive linemen (including Gs and Cs) are the third highest franchise tag number behind QB and DE. DT average for top 5 is a full $9.4mil per year less than QB. Less than HALF. These are the ratios you have to be looking at. Compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franchise_tag#Franchise-tagged_players_2).

If we draft a DT at #1, he will probably make right about whatever the top 2 or 3 DTs in the league are making. Not what Peyton Manning is going to be making, or what Sam Bradford is making. DTs are paid like DTs, QBs are paid like QBs, WRs are paid like WRs, CBs are paid like CBs. Top picks are just automatically assumed to be tops at their position in the NFL too, getting contracts like it. That is why the rookie cap is so important. Make them earn it first.

The phone ain't ringing. And it likely won't this year. Not the type of draft where people are clamoring to move that far up.

I dont get why people find this so hard to comprehend. I'm not saying it wont happen, but I doubt very seriously it will.

All those reasons listed why we will move down are the same reasons no one will overpay to move up.

If anything it would be 17 and 33. There is a chance we could get 28.. But we wouldn take the deal. But if they was to throw in all 3 picks e would take it but just 17 and 33 i dont think so. The reason why is because I dont think we want to trade back that far.

Agreed. I say hell no to #17 and #33. Who we gonna get at #17?! Maybe Corey Liuget. Maybe Mallett. Maybe Bowers. Maybe Quinn, at the most optimistic.

Agree on yea to 17, 28 AND 33. Then the quantity makes up for the drop in quality. Doubt NE would do it, but anything's possible. If they did that trade, they'd still have the #1 overall, a 2nd and two 3rds which is still good for a 14-2 team....

If he has no reason to pick at number one, why would someone else be chomping at the bit to move up there?

No one will call and we will pick the player that they think will best fit our system.

There is ALWAYS some sucker...errr...team that feels X player is THE guy. ALWAYS!

There may not be anymore drafts after this draft, in which case Hurney might as well go bonkers

There will be drafts...I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or over-exaggerating for effect...there will be drafts and a salary cap and most of the things we're used to in the new CBA whenever it comes around. At most we might lose the franchise tag and/or transition tags.
