If smitty wanting out is true, does our draft strategy change?

Sure... Lets draft rookie QB and give him nothing to work with... Really, you guys think Gettis and Lafell are good WR1 and WR2? You think vets like Hasselbeck want to throw to scrubs? It did not work last year, why force it again this year? WR is pretty obvious option at #1. There is a huge dropoff in talent after Green and Jones.

Much easier to find a capable WR in FA than a QB.

I think it makes Green more attractive if Smith is actually leaving. This year's draft is very deep a DT and we can grab a 1st round grade DT in the 3rd. I think QB needs to be addressed via free agency or trade.

remember the report last week that the Panthers were in love with AJ Green....I figured then that was because Smith was out.

I think they are torn big time with what to do at #1, Newton is a huge gamble if he bust for us. I'm sure they prefer a trade down where they can get Green or Jones and a 2nd rounder to get a quality DT or QB

I fully endorse the Cam Newton pick but if it's true about smitty wanting out I'd prob take Green and look to get Landry Jones with our 1st next year.

Its very probable we have a top 10, maybe top 5 pick next year and chance at elite QB then

Maybe I'm naive, but aside from V Jackson, who has Phillip Rivers thrown to in the last couple of years. Gates has been hurt forever, and even Jackson was unknown until 2 years ago. Maybe a good OC can improve QB and WR. I'm not convinced anyone past Green and Jones is better than what we have now, and we have too many other needs to spend a high pick (rd 1-4)on WR.

...specifically, where does this leave the prospect of drafting AJ Green? on the surface it would seem like a great move. lose smitty, gain a likely elite receiver that could be on the team for a decade.

I say it makes no difference, but that's me playing armchair GM, of course.

I'd prefer to pick up another veteran wide out who is a true team player and a teacher. I don't dislike the young guys we have at WR (including Armanti Edwards) right now and under the tutelage of even a guy who's had something of a journeyman career and "Offensive Consultant" Ricky Proehl, I feel like we've got a shot at a dangerous receiving corps in the next couple of years.

I say concentrate your picks and/or money on QB, DT, and maybe the offensive line.

Along the same train of thought, let's also hope that Shockey isn't a bust. He could make a huge difference out there. He could also be completely useless if he can't stay healthy.

Not going to beat a dead horse that was beaten for several weeks already, but I really really wish that Brown wasn't such a stubborn GM in Cincy. It's a perfect marriage between us and them. We swap spots with them, receive their 2nd and Palmer, and they get to move up to #1 and get Newton plus maybe we throw in a mid-rounder to balance it out. We would have a veteran QB which we need, and gives us time to evaluate Pickles. We draft AJ Green at #4 and have Green, Gettis and LaFell with a veteran QB to dish the rock out to them. Plus, we can address QB next year when the talent pool is much better. I won't "hate" the Newton pick because I think he will eventually succeed, but this trade would make us instantly better. Obviously this isn't going to happen, but damnit, it makes so much sense......haha.
