Question About the Carolinas

I just wanted to thank everyone. I'm getting some great advice. Both Raleigh and Charlotte seem to have their perks, I guess it will really come down to which has better job opportunities when I start looking.

Wait, you haven't moved here yet and already you're complaining about how it's better back up north?

You're doing it wrong.

Well that's why I'm asking, I'm trying to find a real gem in the south: a Northern style big city populated with polite Southern folk. I'm pretty sure Southern manners and personality will win out over a great party scene, I'm just trying to get an idea of how much I'm gonna have to give up.

and i hate to say this, every fiber of my being loathes Raleigh. I still have nightmares about 40/440. Where is your exit? How do you get to your exit? My God even Raymond Babbit would say screw it give me Judge Wapner. Been a few years so maybe its better.

Haha! Yeah, I tangle with 64/40/440 every time I drive to Pinehurst. It is pretty hellish. It certainly doesn't help that they keep changing the exits and exit numbers.

raleigh isn't too bad now. I lived there late 80s thru mid-90s and there wasn't too much, but I still found the bars. If I had to be moved today to another city in NC, I'd pick Raleigh first, then Wilmington (cheers biscuit).

But, like boo said, while I lived in Raleigh I couldn't wait to move back to Charlotte and I did (after a 15-year absence). Everything I want in a city is here.

I have a lot of family in your area, along the Delaware & Maryland lines.. My aunt lived in Chesapeake City. I loved that area, especially on Canal Days. They have something similar at Lake Norman every year. It usually falls the same weekend as my family reunion, so I always miss out. Coincidentally, they have Canal Days around the same time so it's all good.

yeah, if anyone has the 80's & 90's version of Raleigh in their head then they need an update. Matter of fact, it's changed a lot in just the last year. Over a billion dollars going into the downtown area.

I wouldn't live anywhere else in NC but Wilmington.

Almost every day after work I drive down to the marina and get on my boat and go for a nice little booze cruise. Have a few beers, stop by one of the bar/restaurants on the water and grab a fresh mahi sammich.

Head home about 9ish.

Most days my girl, her friends and a couple of my buddies will meet me there around 6 pm.

UNCW and all the pretty things that it brings is right in the middle of town.

Boating, diving, and spearfishing from April 15 through November. and after that surf fishing.

Raleigh and CLT are great and all, but the lifestyle is in Wilm.

Sounds alot like the place I grew up in but on the opposite coast.

I do know of a freeway that goes directly from Barstow to the ILM, hard to get lost.

It would not be totally out of the question to tell my son he is getting some freeway driving training and we end up there on a whim.

Sure is... and it ends about 3 miles from where I sit at this very moment. Get in the car. This weekend is supposed to be sunny and the bikinis will be out.
