Question About the Carolinas

Im not too familiar with Raleigh, but if you are planning on living in the suburbs in either place, you probably wont be able to tell a difference, and Raleigh may excel there.

If you want to live in the city, id venture to guess you'd prefer Charlotte, as from what ive seen, Charlotte has more going on Uptown than Raleigh. I.e., the stadium, arenas are mostly downtown. Definitely cheaper to live in the burbs, but to me, its more convenient to live "in town" and not have to deal with the commute and traffic. Yes, the traffic. Id much rather drive around Charlotte on a Saturday than any of the outlying communities. They are just a mess with traffic.

If im working out of town during the week, im going against traffic.

from all I've seen, it's not that far of a stretch to say Raleigh has more to do downtown than Charlotte..

Oh, yeah, geography is a huge selling point. Within 3 hours of Beach is +10 points, within 6 hours of beach is +1 point. Outside of that is not even an option for me.

Within 3 hours of mountains is +5 points, and being able to at least see mountains on the horizon is +5 points. Maryland is flatter than Calista Flockhart. I went to the generously named, "Sugarloaf Mountain" and thought, "This is a foothill of the mountain, right? Where's the rest of it? Behind this?"

Well in that case, go to Washington state. I lived 10 minutes from the beach (albeit not one to find a lot of girls in bikinis) and 30 minutes from Mt. Rainier. Snowball fights in July FTW.

Just walk down College Street in Charlotte any weekend night. The bar/club scene is more than sufficient. I'm sure Raleigh with its larger student population will have more going on.

As far as living in the 'burbs, if you live south or east of Charlotte (Pineville/Matthews/Waxhaw/Monroe) almost all of Charlotte is convenient. If you live north like me (Cabarrus County), you have mainly a 4 lane interstate full of your typical NC drivers going 15 below the posted speed.

Panthro, what route do you take to get to Charleston in 3 hours? I think I made it that quick once, going a lot faster than the posted speed. 77 to 26.

The Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) is awesome for food and has a lot of college sports in the area. Being from there I'm somewhat biased but it's still a great place. I'm on the outskirts of Charlotte now (Northeast side?) and I can't comment really...

Char is perfectly located. the beach and mtns are just far enough away you appreciate both when you get there. During the Fall, go West young man every weekend and enjoy Boone, Asheville, hiking, fresh water and fly fishing. From Mar to Oct, hit the beaches. Swim from May to Sept.

Driving to Charleston is a piece of cake. What we always do is go down there our first leg of summer and hang around for a couple of days, then take Hwy 17 up the coast to Myrtle Beach and then finish in Wilmington.

Just be prepared to be taxed. But thats about it.

whaaaat?

perfectly located? Isn't it like a 3 - 4 hour drive at least to a beach from Charlotte?

Central NC is perfectly situated... you can be at the beach in an hour and 45 mins, and the foothills/mountains in about 3...
