Predict out 2010 record with Newton as QB

How would Clausen be rated this year? He would be number 3 behind Newton and Gabbert?? Why, he has a number of leadership issues which made him drop last year. They would be the same this year. Add in that we know from experience they are true. If we could wind back the clock and pick again, I am positive we would have passed on both Edwards and Clausen. Part of what is making the situation so hard this year is that we ignored the red flags last year and got burnt. Hurney isn't ignoring them this time around just gauging how important they are versus the upside and positives.

Not looking to argue, but curious - what leadership issues? Do you think any rookie in the NFL is considered a leader among vets?

The problem for many folks is that they see Clausen's upside as severely limited while Newton's is much higher. The issue isn't how they would have played in 2010 but how they will play in 2011 or in five years.

This is my whole point - upside severely limited based on what? So if we draft Cam and he starts in 2011 and we go 2-14 will everyone want us to draft Luck in 2012? You can't argue on one side that we need to give a player time to develop and draft for the future and then turn around and throw a guy to the wolves after one year in a situation that Tom Brady would probably not have done much better.

I am just trying to understand peoples' measuring stick for success. The same people that are stating we should draft Cam and give him time to develop are ready to give up on Clausen after one year. Makes no sense especially considering the fact that drop back passers like Clausen have historically been more successful in the NFL v. mobile qb's like Newton.

So why is everyone ready to mortgage the farm on Newton when he wouldn't have done any better than Clausen last year? Point is - Clausen wasn't given a fair shake as we all know. Newton seems a lot riskier than Clausen because we will have to pay him a lot more money and he is a lot farther behind as far as the pro language.

Agreed 100%. To draft Newton would be a big mistake.

Bring in Dareus and give Claussen at least one more year.

Manning's 1st year was terrible. It takes time to learn

the NFL.

We don't need Newton but if we had him he would do

no better then 3 - 13.

Pass on Newton, there are better guys out there who

will help our Panthers win.

I agree 100%. No one has answered my question - why are we treating Clausen different? I am not saying he is our future, but I am saying you can't say he is NOT our future after one season.

I saw every snap of every Panther game last year, and if you did as well you wouldn't be asking that questions. There's a difference between your average QB rookie struggles, and what Clausen did last year. Do you know how many TD's Clausen threw last year to receivers? It's a loaded question, don't bother answering! I'm sorry, but I'm convince the guy doesn't have "it" at all what so ever.

I am still waiting for a Cam fan to explain to me why we should draft him and allow 2+ years for him to develop and learn the system when Clausen was only given a couple games to learn.

As an outsider looking in, this makes a lot of sense. If you're not gonna give the kid his shot, the Panthers need to just out right release him and draft their new franchise QB on Thursday.

I would love for Clausen to bounce back after last year. I would love to say it was a myriad of outside issues combined with rookie play that made him suck so bad. However he showed no visible improvement from 1st start till 9th start. As a matter of fact he looked worse as the season went on. He wasn't even up and down, it was all down. A guy off his couch came in and until the last part of the fourth quarter played better than Clausen. I just don't see Clausen becoming a viable starter and feel like it's a waste of a year to even waste starting him again.
