Cam Newton vs Steve Smith

Panthro

Recommended Posts

Two fights hardly compares to Newton's list of crap. Plus, Smith was already here and a contributor, you have a chance now to avoid that type of crap by avoiding Newton.

so a grown professional man sucker punching multiple teammates in the face isn't as big of a deal as a kid in college buying a stolen laptop (or whatever went down?). Pretty sure there is a list a mile long of people who have done comparable or worse things in college........probably not many that have done what Steve did.

I could see Cam playing with the same kind of chip on his shoulder just like Smith does. Hell he did it all last year with the pay for play stuff being the center of attention because of the media.

Cosigned panthro once he starts showing promise the doubters will forget about things that happened 3 years ago

The difference is Cam actually did something to deserve that criticism. Steve's criticism comes from people saying he was too short to play in the NFL....

I think your 2nd sentence is refering to motivation.

Steve Smith earned all the negative things said about him for the most part......he has gotten away w/ destructive behavior in Carolina b/c of performance.

I meant criticism before he even got to the league. The majority of Newton's criticism comes from the off the field stuff, sure theres some on field question marks as well but the majority of concerns are character issues. The concerns about Steve coming out of college were all about his height and being able to be an every down player in the NFL....

The same reasons everyone hated Vick two years ago and now they love him. Winning games in the NFL apparently absolves crimes in some minds.

Obviously some people still don't love him because as of right now Peyton Hillis is ahead of him in votes for the Madden cover....

Because Steve Smith was not a highly touted rookie for us. He blossomed from a nobody to a superstar on our team and was an integral piece in taking us to a level we have never been.

Cam Newton has not given us the memories nor the excitement as Panther fans that Steve Smith has and therefore can not even be compared at this point in time.

I think this has been corrected 101 thousand times on the huddle,

but for what it's worth,

Newton BOUGHT a STOLEN laptop. Significant difference. Though it is believed Newton knew the laptop WAS STOLEN as he threw it out the window when the cops arrived to investigate.

One is a known commodity and the other is a big ? (both with charachter and trnasitioning to the NFL).

Personally, I don't have that big of an issue with Cam's off the field issues.

Cheating...a little concerning, but what college student didn't plagarize or cheat in some way.

Laptop...issue IF he knew it was stolen. He said that he didn't, and I give him the benefit of the doubt.

Pay for Play...biggest issue to me. IF he knew about it and lied about it, I have an issue here.

Bottom line, my concerns with Cam are ENTIRELY related to whether his lack of experience in a complex offense can translate to the NFL.

If people KNEW that Cam would produce like Smitty has, the support for him would be overwhelming.

Whats the difference between people saying Cam is not an NFL QB to Smith being just a punt returner? Watching his outstanding play last year with everything that was surrounding him. Makes me believe him when he says he'll use the doubters/criticism as motivation on the field (the gun analogy).

Because Steve didn't have the character concerns coming out of college. It's a whole package when evaluating a prospect not just parts. I'm not really sure what's so hard for you grasp about that....
