Mayock Officially Becomes a Hater

after watching Gruden, I don't think Cam has the mental tools or atleast not on the same level as an Andy Dalton even, who was much more impressive than Cam.

He might or might not have the mental tools, that is the gamble. He has never had to do the kind of things that will be asked of him. He could not rattle anything off, because he had never done it before. Can he? Hurney will have to decide.

Whether the money is more important to him i think is a very good question. Most guys who grow up with a father in the home end up taking on his value system. Did his dad teach him that rules be damned, money trumps all other?

I don't know about that, but I do know his dad often talks about taking negative energy and converting that into motivation.

Cam was his third QB entering the process and he has easily warmed on him and said a number of positives about him over the months, but he always said he didn't know if he's put in the effort to e a star.

Now he's saying more than just "I don't know," but "He'll be content to be a millionaire." That's a pretty big change, IMO... unless he always felt that way and was just trying to be PC.

It's not exactly the same thing. To go from him moving up your board to being concerned because you think he'll be content just getting drafted and paid is a big difference, IMO.

I agree Hurney has spent more time with him and I agree Hurney is likely to have a better idea of that.

Since Mayocks first mock draft Cam has been working hard.

I personally would be looking into his father and the influence and control his father has over him.I personally do not trust the guy after pay for play deal.

His dad seems to talk one way in front of the camera while holding his hand out behind his back. Positive energy to him is who pays the most.

LMAO at anyone using the term Hater anymore. Time to grow up children. That said, the man is stating his opinion and I feel his opinion on this issue is more fact than not.

I have said all along the kid is going to get his millions then bust and not give a poo.

Bravo, everyone is so impressed with your insight! You must have spent months working on your evaluation, and hours in the film room, studying his games, interviews etc. I bet you've had Cam visit you at least 3, maybe 4 times, and you spent time personally evaluating him correct?

No way you're just speculating on the handful of videos you watched on NFL.com and ESPN, and the 38746543 pages of bullshit on forums.

I do respect Mayock as others have stated, and this concerns me a little, however if we do end up picking Cam, I'd hope Hurney and Co. have a good understanding of his drive and wouldn't take him if they had serious doubts whether or not Newton 'cared to be great.'

Just listened to Mayock. Everything was positive, the physical part, the mental part, his passing skills, etc. He even said he doesn't care about the character stuff.

I don't know where his gut feel is coming from. I have always respected MM, and will continue to, but this is puzzling to me.

But hey, it's his opinion. We all have one. It would just be nice to have a better understanding of why he feels this way, rather than just stating it's a gut feeling.

Sorry, that was a bit dick-ish, I'm just frustrated at all the wild speculation about the deep inner most aspects of these players personalities that goes on. Most of us have an extremely limited perspective on this, and when someone makes a comment like "I watchd the Gruedenz QB camp and i think that Cam is a bust becuz i saw dat he didt know what a play was and i seen that he only knew numberz and I learnd numberz wen I wuz 3 so Cam is a bust" it's just pure unfiltered stupidity.

These segments on ESPN are extremely contrived, produced pieces of television, meant more to appease audiences than to really delve into these players personalities and abilities. Agreeing with Mayock is one thing, but some of the ridiculous speculative garbage that people say with the utmost conviction is pathetic. I'm not asking everyone to try and research this like a NFL scout, just to temper their opinions and stop dealing in absolutes, a la "Cam is a bust becuz he just wantz to b a milonnare."

If we do pick Cam, and he does end up failing in what our franchise expects of him, i'm not sure many of us could tolerate the droves of idiots claiming ,"I KNEW HE WERZ A BUST CAUZ I SAY DA GRUDENZ CAMP AND I KNEW HE WERZ ONE"

“Something tells me that he’ll be content to be a multimillionaire who’s pretty good,” Mayock said. ”And doesn’t get it done for me.”

Pretty good is a dramatic upgrade around here :D

Anyway it's obvious that Mayock is playing it safe this time. I think his remembers the heat he took for his Jamarcus Russel highest ceiling ever statements. I think it shows a lack of courage in a way, but I would probably do the same. All of his comments have been hedge bets, On one hand he says he has all the intangibles, on the other he says he has a bad feeling about him. If Cam succeeds he says "Oh I told you he had all the tools, I was just a little worried about character", If he fails he says " I told you I was worried about the character but he did have all the tools".

This is just Mayock voicing the major concern that he has. Yes, it makes sense because he has seen it happen BIG time with J Russell, when he thought Russell could be a great QB. But it all comes down to the work ethic.

I believe Newton is nothing like Russell when it comes to motivation and work ethic. Newton shows a much better character and more charisma than Russell ever did.

I like how Mayock's only problem is Newtons character. This shows that Newton has the ability, the talent to be taken #1. I think Carolina will take Newton, because Rivera will be able to motivate and coach Newton into the franchise QB he desperately needs.

Apparently, Gruden's QB Camp is now the universal measurement of a rookie qb's success or failure as they start their respective careers. :smash:
