I been kind of getting a weird feeling that Hurney might be thinking about trading back in. Not having a second round pick really hurt this team to and extent. If we do trade back in why pass on a QB with the first pick. But if we trade back in that second pick has to be a QB because we could be giving up our first next year. I think its either Mallett or Locker. A gun to my head Locker

It is like some people are saying (not you Scot) it would be smarter to use two highly valuable picks on Locker but too risky to use one pick on Newton or Gabbert.

if we want a QB in the first round it should be one of those two...

I certainly hope we go thru 7 rounds without picking a QB this year. So this trade scares me.

Makes no sense that it would be us. We are not looking to use our first and then giving up multiple picks to get back in the first. We are looking to trade down to get our second back and perhaps gain a first next year.

This scenario might fit other teams but clearly isn't us by any stretch of the imagination.

I highly doubt it's us, but there is always that fear when Hurney has the card in his hand.

The only way that we would do this IMO is if Marty/JR has deemed Cam too much of a risk with the no. 1 overall pick, and they are sold on Mallet, Ponder, Dalton etc...

Take the most sure thing player at 1 (Dareus, Green, PP), and trade back in the first to get a QB you are sold on, but does not rank high on the board.

P.S. Had Hurney not traded our 2nd last year for a scrub, none of this would be going on, and we could be looking pretty.

Just out of curiosity why do you think we would trade back in for a QB and not a DT??

To me it would make more sense if a Marvin Austin was still sitting there or someone like that.

Instead of trading a future 1st round pick for Jake Locker.

Also keep in mind that when we made the trade for Otah we were trying to win that next season. Right now we are trying to somewhat rebuild.

As for reasons why it might not be, two main points...

- the DT pool is deeper than the QB pool. Why trade back into the first round for that? Why not the second?

- the stuff they're talking about giving up doesn't really make sense for a DT, but would for a quarterback

This much I can say with reasonable certainty. If it were us and it were a DT being targeted in the first, I seriously doubt it would be Austin (too many character red flags).

IF the Panthers hadn't traded #33 for Armanti Edwards, how many Cam supporters would instead switch to:

Draft safe at #1(Green, PP, Dareus) and take Best Available QB with #33(Dalton, Mallett, Ponder)?

Disagree, and here's why.

Let's say Marty Hurney isn't sold on the top guys (Newton or Gabbert) but he does still want a first round quarterback. If that were true, this deal would make perfect sense.

Again, I don't think it is us (Cardinals, Bills or Bengals more likely) and I actually hope it's not us (really don't want to see us give up another future first rounder) but again, other than the exact terms, there's logic to think it conceivably could be.

I don't think there is a QB after Newton and Gabbert that are worth two valuable picks.

There are a lot more very good DT's that will be available at the end of the 1st round than there will be good QBs there this year.

Austin was just an example. By the way, on a side note, Narwocki was pretty out of touch with the Austin situation as well. He clearly has no idea what went on with Austin judging from his analysis in PFW.

Not that he doesn't have some character concerns :)

I would still be on Cam because there are some great DTs that will be there at #33.

That whole line of thinking has Bills FO written all over it. They have done that so many times. Not attacking you Scot just the thought process.

Given that Clausen would be rated above all quarterbacks but Newton and Gabbert, there is no way we pick up a later round guy or even a Locker or Dalton by trading up into the first and passing on Newton or Gabbert initially. This scenario is only being passed around by folks not wanting a Qb with the first. If we keep the pick it will be Newton. The only way we don't draft him is if we trade down a few picks to pick up someone else and get back our second.

the ONLY way I see us taking a QB anywhere but #1 is if one of the top guys (maybe Mallett) slips all the way to the top of the third and we went defense at #1 and there isn't a D guy they think is as valuable there as Mallett.

Or we may pick up a guy in later rounds to replace Pike if the Panthers aren't sold on him, but I think that's unlikely...

If we trade down 5-10 spots and pick up a 2nd round pick and a future #1, I could see the team still taking a QB with the 1st round pick...just wouldn't be cameron
