There's a team in the draft that has a deal on the table -- I'm guessing New England (surprise!) -- with a team trying to come back into the first round. The deal will net the team dealing the first-rounder the following: a second-round pick in 2011 and a first-round pick in 2012. The deal, I hear, is contingent on the player the trade-up team wants still being there. Could it be Tennessee trading into the bottom of the first round, at 28, to get Jake Locker or Andy Dalton? Keep in mind, the team on the receiving end of the deal being the Patriots is purely King's speculation.

My own speculation is that if this were us, it could mean we're taking someone like Dareus, Green or Peterson first and then trading back into round one to take one of the lower rated QBs like Dalton, Locker or possibly even (shudder) Mallett.

This thoroughly fits Hurney's MO. Anyone who remembers the draft that netted Stewart and Otah knows that.

NOTE: If King has the terms correct, it couldn't be us because we don't have a second round pick this year, but I'm allowing for the possibility he doesn't have the exact terms. lf it actually involves a third rounder this year - or something else - then it indeed could be the Panthers.

You're misunderstanding the deal. The #1 pick isn't involved.

The deal is that the team on the receiving end (King speculates New England) trades the other team (maybe us) a first round pick in exchange for one pick this year and one next.

The hitch is if King is right about it being a second rounder traded to the Pats, it can't be us because we don't have one. If the deal actually involves a third rounder or something else, then it could.

I'm allowing for the possibility he has the terms wrong.
