King: Cam Newton costing Hurney sleep

Once again King is totally speculating that Hurney is losing sleep. He admits they aren't friends and hasn't asked him whether he is losing sleep or not but is speculating because it is a slow Monday and after the draft there will be absolutely nothing to talk about.

Why anyone would put stock in King's column is beyond me.

Hurney knows Newton walked into a junior college in Texas in 2009 and convinced a team of total strangers to follow him, and the team won the national JC title, and he knows Newton walked into Auburn in 2010 and convinced a team of total strangers to follow him, and the team won a national college championship

Some people are natural leaders and winners when it comes to this game.......it is written all over this kid.

As much as I would prefer Dareus due to the immediate impact he would have, Green in the case of Smitty leaving, or Peterson for the BPA and sealing up a side of the field potentially, Cam IS a leader. There are moments of arrogance/over-confidence that definitely shine through.

To be honest, any of those 4 (didn't include Von Miller, but he is also a great talent) would make me happy. Cam is going to take time, but I've been convinced that he has the competitive drive to succeed in time. Especially with a natural born ability to rally people to him.

Tough choice, glad I don't have to make it... but I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish it was already over :(

If you are losing sleep over a player that is a sign that he isn't the right player for the #1 overall pick. That pick MUST be a slam dunk!

I am glad I don't have to make the decision.

You must know nothing about physiology. Any decision that puts your future in doubt can make you lose sleep over-analyzing it and that goes both ways. What if he instead takes MD or pp7 and Newton ends up reaching his potential and is a perennial pro-bowler. Look back at the 08 draft the Phins had an opportunity to take Matt Ryan a franchise QB but instead played it safe by picking Long (who still turned out to be a good pick). You don't think that Parcells lost sleep over that decision (and probably still does).

Were talking about a decision that could potentially get him fired and if its bad enough could be his last stint as a GM.

Newton walked into Charlotte in 2011 and convinced a team of total strangers to follow him, and the team still went 1-15 because athletic ability alone won't get it done in the NFL.

VY says high (his rookie year he threw more ints then TD's and the Titans still improved by 4 wins). If we draft Newton and he starts this year I will bet a years salary we will be better then we were last year on O.

Cam has led, but leaders also lead themselves to make correct decisions. When has Cam been a leader for more than a season? Do you really think a season on a hot team makes him a leader? There is a difference between frontrunner and leader.

King: Cam Newton costing Hurney sleep

cam-newton-marty-hurney.jpg

Sports Illustrated's Peter King has known Marty Hurney since they both were sportswriters covering the NFC East in the 1980s, and while he says they were never friends, he suspects his old sportswriting peer isn't sleeping well these days.

That's because Hurney is picking first in a draft with no clear No. 1 pick. And Hurney has a perceived need at quarterback, where Cam Newton is both tantalizing and dangerous.

As King points out, the pay is good to be an NFL general manager. Hurney is earning his this week. And he's probably anxious for Thursday to get here. It remains to be seen if he'll sleep better afterward.

Shouldn't cost hurney one second of sleep. Its simple, pass on the guy. He isn't worth the #1 pick period. Take the best trade down offer and let someone else lose millions and set their franchise back.
