The Flipside of Gilbert

Well, isn't this interesting? :sosp:

Some years back, the Redskins found themselves at a huge impasse with a huge player, defensive tackle Sean Gilbert. Panthers coach Dom Capers coveted Gilbert. The team made alternate offers, but they weren't enough to satisfy D.C. management. The Redskins were rigid in their desire for the standard franchise compensation of two first round picks.

In the end, it was Panthers management that blinked and gave up the picks. The Panthers recouped one first rounder in a trade of a second round pick the following year with the Dolphins. The Redskins parlayed the extra pick they got into a draft bonanza when Mike Ditka went gaga over Ricky Williams.

The results: Not so good all around.

Gilbert was decent, but was never worth what it cost to get him. The Saints got Williams, who like Gilbert was okay, but not worth what he cost to acquire. Of the group, Washington likely came out the best, but while they gained some good players (Champ Bailey being the best) with their passel of picks, done right that draft could have set them up to be contenders for years. It didn't.

And now, years later, the Panthers find themselves in the role of the Redskins, with a disgruntled franchise player with whom they're willing to part...for the standard price of two first round picks.

Unclear whether Peppers shares Gilbert's willingness to sit out entire seasons if his demands aren't met. Appearances would say no, but who can really say at this point.

Bottom line: It's interesting to watch how the football world turns.

I'm still pissed about that trade. Gilbert had one GREAT year with the Rams early in his career and we gave up two first round picks for him. Peppers is a better player and we probably won't get comparable compensation...although I am holding out hope.

Capers is in Green Bay now, right? What kinda picks they got?...

Until Peppers plays the "God told me to hold out" like Sean Gilbert did.. you are right.

Lets get those first round picks.

we will not get more than 1, if we get one at all which i seriously doubt.

the nfl doesn't work the same way it did back in the nineties. philosophies have drastically changed.
