Most important question this week: Do u trust Hurney & Co

Once this team can have back to back winning seasons, get to the Playoffs frequently, and have a good QB for the first time ever...the GM has done a good job here. Until then, no I do not trust Hurney and company. You can argue til you're red in the face that he's drafted "great" players...but it hasn't shown where it counts: the standings.

It's not so much Hurney as it is the company that I trust. Hurney made a big change in the scouting department a couple of years back and since then the Panthers have been one of the more consistent teams in the league.

I will say that I disagree with the opening post though. I think the biggest question is after 9 years of working together how good can Hurney be working with a new coaching staff. Building a team should be independent from the coaches opinion but the GM has to fully understand the coaches philosiphy in order to draft the right players. So after nine years of drafting players to play in a Henning Coryell Offense, Davidson EP system and a Fox Cover 2/Tampa 2 can Hurney now in a matter of months be able to acurately draft for a Zampize Coryell System and a Jim Johnson/Rivera Defense?

You go back to the 2002 class Hurney drafted a defensive playmaker over a QB so that Fox was able to build his defense around that player. Does Hurney know Rivera well enough to know what type of player that may be? Or if Hurney decides this time around he wants to get that franshise QB to build the offense around does he really understand the type of QB that Chud needs to build a great Zampize Coryell offense?

I think that just based on history, Hurney showed that he wa able to quickly learn Fox and turn the worst team in the NFL into Super Bowl runner-ups in two years. Can he do that again? Or will he become a victim of his own success by relying too much on the past?

IMO those are some very important questions not too many on here are asking.

any round but the second round, I think he'll make the right pick.

that doesn't mean that pick won't bust, but I think he'll make the right choice anyway.

For some reason the 2nd round has never been kind to us. Maybe we can pick up a couple more 6th rounders.

Its odd but I think hurney has too much power right now...last year I think Fox wasnt involved as much during the draft as past years and look what happened. Clausen didnt pan out, we made a bonehead move giving our second for Edwards and we drafted two QB's and 3 Wr's and still had the worst offense in the league. I think hurney's best asset is finding talent deep (king, hardy, munnerlyn, schwartz, hangartner)...the problem with hurney is when he gets too agressive and starts wheeling and dealing. I really think fox was a calming and conservative influence that kept Hurney on a leash. It remains to be seen how Rivera will be or if he even has the same influence as Fox.

Well the draft is only one piece of the puzzle and I hope they will make some good decisions in the off season that will fill the cracks.

Last year was terrible....I feel JR must have been involved in many of those decisions or Hurney would not be here.

Yes. This draft is not really about Cam Newton or No Cam Newton. It is about Marty Hurney. Will he risk his career on another controversial QB with upside or will he stay safe, as he has traditionally?

Ultimately, it is his decision. We all probably agree that he wants to trade down, so that tells me he is not completely sold on Newton--not that he won't take Newton. However, the risk is as huge as the spotlight he will be in. After nearly trading this pick away to move up to take Clausen last year, and after the Edwards reach, will he do it again? Will he ignore Cam's red flags as he did Clausen's? Will a bad pick cost him his job?

If Cam is the pick and he stinks, how can we keep a GM who spent tons of time looking into a QB and missed--again? If we pass and he becomes a star, how can we keep a GM who takes Clausen and passes on a star? If he cannot trade down, he will have to decide. Hurney will have to make the call.

I say he takes the DT from Bama when the heat is on. It is his style to do so.
