The 3-4

Recommended Posts

(cause someone has to)

Cam Newton at the 5-technique, everything else is just semantics

To answer the original question, Brown probably would be used as an OLB - I seem to remember him as a tweener depending on formation when he was being drafted - cause for a while, a few people were mocking him to us

I think its hard to say because we dont actually have any tackles on our roster haha. if we draft Darius I think he will be one of our ends with CJ being the other. then MLB will be either Beason and Conner or Beason and Davis. OLB will most likely be 2 of the following, Davis, E. Brown, Hardy, or Norwood.

Yea, we've run some "3-4 looks" the past few years. I would assume the 3-4 package would look something like:

DEs: Hardy and Johnson - both are big guys and can stay in for the 3-4 looks. pretty good situation with these two being able to play both sets.

NT: Whoever the biggest DT is

OLB: Probably Norwood and/or Brown - If they wanna throw both of them in there to not tip off which is rushing (or perhaps even to rush both). If only one of them is in, the other OLB is Davis or Anderson

ILB: I'd guess Beason and Davis (if he's healthy and playing) - Quickest LBs, probably best in coverage of all of them

he's definitely said it will be more than just "3-4 fundementals", as I am pretty sure he also said we'd give the offenses some "different loos" relating to the 3-4 thing. He's also said we have the personnel for it, so Im not sure who he is planning to use where but yah.

Dareus would be nice to have for it...

One of the reasons I want to go defense is to really give Rivera the chance to coach a defense with top talent at literally every position. I think he could really bring us to the top of the league again.

Yeah it would be great. I think our 3-4 look will kind of look something like this thats if they draft Dareus. They got dareus at NT Charles johnson at RDE and Hardy or Bryaton LDE. Then you have Beason and Connor in the middle Everett Brown at LOLB and Davis or Anderson at ROLB.

I really have been thinking alot about this team 3-4 looks. They will e nice but if they really want to make the switch to 3-4 this year is the best year to be honest. You get Everett Brown as you permanent Rush OLB give him time to grow in that System I believe that will be the only way they can use all of his talent. He is not a hand in the grown guy its hard because he is hella undersized but in a 3-4 he can be a permeanent rush OLB and it gives him a chance to utlize his quick first step. Also in that Defense the transition would be easy its just our defensive line.If we were to draft dareus he will start at 5tech day one. and I know there is and old guy in free agency that is waiting to get on a team and that jenkins to play NT. As for the Linebackers there is no Doubt that Beason and connor would be studs in the Middle.

Here is my take on the scenario.

Tyler Brayton- Tyler Brayton played in the 3-4 in Oakland and was a non-factor. The 3-4 was really the sole reason his performance struggled the way it did in Oakland. (I don't think Brayton would mind playing in a 3-4 again but I think it may effect him.)

Everette Brown- Everette Brown was made for the 3-4. His agility and pure speed is what an OLB needs in a 3-4. At Brown's Pro Day and combine workout's he attracted mostly 3-4 teams, which is why I was shocked the Panthers traded up to get him. (In the 3-4, Everette Brown would be to Carolina what Brian Orakpo is to Washington.)

Greg Hardy- Greg Hardy has the moves and the speed to be an OLB in a 3-4 defense. Many scouts thought that Hardy would be playing in a 3-4 at the NFL level. (I think Brown and Hardy would be our OLB’s in the 3-4.)

Charles Johnson- I am not 100% sure if Johnson could play DE in a 3-4 because to my knowledge he never has, but with his athleticism, speed, and pure power; I am 99% sure he could. (Johnson would be a DE in the 3-4, I would think.)

Hilee Taylor- If Taylor is on the team then the 3-4 will be his coming out party. Taylor to my knowledge is the fastest DE on the team and would really benefit from the 3-4. (He would back up Brown or Hardy.)

Eric Norwood- Norwood played the 3-4 at South Carolina and dominated in it, no questions asked he can play the 3-4. He would see the field a lot in the 3-4. (I think Norwood would essentially be the third starter for the OLB position and Norwood, Hardy, and Brown would just rotate.)

Corvey Irvin, Tommie Duhart, Louis Ellis- Irvin would benefit the most out of all the defensive ends in the 3-4 mainly because he is the biggest of the DT that has the most skill. (I think Irvin would be the starter in the 3-4 with the current roster. I don’t think Ellis or Duhart will be on the team, but they are on the current roster.)

Derek Landri, Nick Hayden, Ed Johnson, Andre Neblett- I think Landri and Neblett could potentially play NT in a 3-4 but it might be a stretch. I know Hayden and Johnson can’t, they aren’t big enough or athletic enough. (I think Landri and Neblett get hurt a little in the 3-4, but could still see time. Hayden and Johnson will most likely not see the field in a 3-4.)

Jon Beason, Dan Connor- There is no doubt in my mind these two can play ILB in a 3-4. (I would think they would be the starting ILB’s in the 3-4.)

Thomas Davis, James Anderson, Nic Harris- I think these guys can play both ILB and OLB in the 3-4 and be situational rotators at those positions. I also think Davis could play DE in a 3-4 because of his amazing strength. (If Davis is 100% I could see him being a DE in a 3-4, if he is the only option left)

Jordan Senn, Sean Ware, Thomas Williams, and Jason Williams- I don’t know which of these guys if any will make the roster but I think these guys get hurt in the 3-4 due to the overwhelming depth at LB. (Not sure what to do with these guys.

Here is what I got.

OLB Everette BrownILB Jon BeasonILB Dan ConnorOLB Greg Hardy

DE Charles JohnsonNT Corvey IrvinDE Tyler Brayton

Thomas Davis- OLB/DE (The Panthers really would need to draft another DE to run the 3-4 so they don't have to stick linebackers at that position.)

Derek Landri- NT/DE

Andre Neblett- NT

Hilee Taylor- OLB

Eric Norwood- OLB

Did not Include

DT's, DE's, and LB's we might draft.

Left Out

Jordan Senn

Sean Ware

Thomas Williams

Jason Williams

Louis Ellis

Tommie Duhart

Ed Johnson

Nick Hayden

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
