The only way I'll be happy with Dareus is if we at least attempt to address the QB situation through a veteran or another pick in this draft (Mallett or Dalton). If we do that then I'll accept Dareus in part because this draft sucks terribly at the top.

If Softi thinks we should take Dareus, then that means we probably shouldn't.

Cam Newton - QB - Player

Former high-ranking Panthers executive Tony Softli predicts that Carolina will pass on Cam Newton and take Alabama DT Marcell Dareus with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

"They need defensive linemen. They have for awhile," says Softli, who also has a history with the Rams. "I really think they're gonna pass on Cam Newton. ... I really believe it's gonna be the defensive tackle." While we still take everything with a grain of salt, it's important to note that Softli's info has been solid this offseason. He was the first to point out Adrian Clayborn's Erb Palsy condition, and among the first to explicitly report on Ryan Mallett's drug use at Arkansas.

If Darues really is the pick, I would think that we would here more information about the Panthers having private interviews with Dalton, Ponder, and Kaepernick. Does anyone know if these guys have even been contacted by the Panthers.

Newton, Gabbert, and Locker are going to be drafted in the first, so if the Panthers traded up to get in the second you would think it would be for Dalton (may go in the first), Ponder (may go in the first), or Kaepernick.

Rotoworld said softi used to work for the panthers and he have a lot of inside scoop around the league. Take it for what it worth, I could of care less. I'm gonna have to love our 1st rounder no matter what.

but this isn't an inside scoop...this is just a guess on his part...he's not saying they are gonna pick dareus just that he thinks they will...nobody knows who we are gonna pick b/c they haven't made a final selection yet

Rotoworld makes it sound like this guy has connections but you right, he might be guessing. Why did they take this report down anyway? Only 5 more days of wait time.

He gave his opinion on who we should draft, he didn't say that we were going to draft him.

He was the director of college scouting for the Panthers a few years ago and is often blamed for one of the worst drafts we ever had (2005). He took a position with the Rams not long after that and then proceeded to turn them into the worst team in the league. He doesn't exactly have that good of a reputation when it comes to talent evaluation any more.

I agree, he definitely doesn't have one of the greatest track records.

But, often times, guys like this turn out to be decent reporters/analysts/etc. Take Matt Millan for example, or Michael Lombardi.

True, he could become a good reporter, but he didn't cite any inside sources. He just gave an opinion. His qoute was:

"They need defensive linemen. They have for awhile," says Softli, who also has a history with the Rams. "I really think they're gonna pass on Cam Newton. ... I really believe it's gonna be the defensive tackle."

That sounds a whole lot like an opinion and not an inside scoop to me.

Softli was the Panthers director of college scouting before moving on to the Rams (and driving them into the toilet and getting fired).

A while back he indicated the Panthers would (and should) take Newton. I acknowledged he could be right but said that Softli's opinion isn't one that I take seriously because he wasn't very good at his job (an opinion that I still hold).

Does he still have an inside connection to the team? Derned if I know. I'd imagine that the majority of people who worked with him would be elsewhere now, but I guess it's possible.

I'll be interested to see what the folks who vehemently defended him say now
