I came to a realization today...

Newton isn't at the top of anyone's board, that tells me enough.

So you just go by what the various talking heads tell you?

If they had a running back as BPA, we should take a running back, even if it isn't a need for the team?

I don't believe that. You may have other criteria, but it is not just because he is not at the top of Kiper or Mayock's big board.

How about every NFL.com analyst?

McShay Mock

McShay has us taking him as of 4/20. If there is a newer board, please link.

Walterfootball has us taking him #1. (updated 4/19)

Having a player mocked #1 doesn't mean that player is at the top of their big board... I believe that is what JOAT was saying.

Kiper's "Big Board" has PP7 at #1 now... but that's just his opinion. (LOL, yeah, we're taking a CB).

Besides... what the hell is a "Big Board" besides a mock really... I mean... BPA? Seriously... does anyone honestly expect teams to go with BPA every time?

Pretty sure a big board ranks players by skill, while a mock ranks on which player will go where.

I.E. Von Miller, Dareus, PP7, Green, top of the big board

Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert top of mocks because of need and hype.

Yeah, but seriously... "BPA" is subjective as hell. The fact it changes from week to week is ludicrous.

Fairley didn't all the sudden become less of a DT in a matter of days. A.J. Green didn't suddenly forget how to catch passes.

That's where the combine and scouting information comes into play. Fairley forgot how to show up on time so he slipped. Dareus worked his ass off and won the #1 DT spot.

All i have to say is that it really depends if Carolina is sold on Newton been a pro NFL quarterback and do they believe he can help this team win. Despite what we feel should happen or what we think should happen it dont matter. What matters is what Hurney, Rivera and Chud thinks. There is a sense around the league that Newton has a good chance been the pick. I have no problem with it. Im for anybody who can help our team win and have impact. Im also for tradeing down if we have the opportunity to. I believe we can trade down to number 5 overall and pick up some more picks and still get and impact player. I also believe we can trade down between 4 and 5 and still be able to get Newton.

But to be honest im just ready for draft day.

The big board just ranks players by their talent level/ability to play right away. A potential franchise QB trumps all, however;Even Mayock says it himself. It comes down to whether the Panthers think Newton/Gabbert is one or not. If they don't then they won't draft them, it's as simple as that.

But terrible, or even average college QBs, do NOT become superstars.

Do you consider 5k yards, 35 TDs and 17 INTs over two years to be good? I would argue those are pretty average college stats...

If we pick Dareus... expect a run like Houston. Missing the playoffs for years... being on the threshold of good. But never being great. Not a knock on Dareus. He's good. Will probably be like Mario Williams good. But you don't wash the floors in a burning house. You take care of the biggest problem first.

Do you know WHY Houston missed the playoffs last year (and most other years)? I'll give you a hint: It's not their offense... at all...

As to the mock stuff, it's simple: A mock draft is how you perceive team needs and the team direction, whereas a a big board is how you feel about a prospect compared to the other prospects in a draft. Often (but not always), the difference between a mock and a big board represents the reaches you think teams are willing to make.
