Clausen stopped listening to coaches

I can't defend a guy not listening to coaches, even bad ones.

I'll grant that the situation was awful last year and there have been some statements about the coaches not even really coaching, but you still have to give it your personal best even in a bad situation like that.

For what it's worth, people have been saying that Clausen's working his tail off this offseason. I hope that's true.

I think all three QB's deserve a pass and a shot with the new regime and an actual QB coach.

I'd agree with that.

But if I were Rivera, I'd still make a mental note of this story (if true).

Today, there was a grammatical error made... That will live in infamy.

(What do I when?)

A visit from Tommy Jone.

td/int is one of the worst metrics to use, but hell, let's go ahead. in their last season of college, Newton was 30/7. Clausen was 28/4. Guess which is better when we're being all stupid and nutty about stats?

edit: btw I prefer to look at how many passes are thrown per interception because if you throw the ball a ton you should have more interceptions, but that is not the same as throwing them more often per pass attempt... ultimately tho they still are poor ways to look at this kind of thing because you actually need to watch the game tape to see what caused the interceptions.

Wish more people got that sort of thing.

When Matt Moore started everyone called for Clausen, When Clausen started everyone called for Pike, When Pike got some playing time everyone called for AE. When AE didn't start we settled for St. Pierre and Null.

Could it be, that not just our staff but our entire QB corp SUCKED.

We got rid of one of the SUCKERS in the staff, now lets get rid of the rest in the QB's and lets take a chance for once.

If 6 pro QBs failed here, could it be that the problem was not QB? Would that make more sense than to say that all 6 need to leave and justify it by suggesting that we gamble on a QB with character, mechanical, and cerebral questions?

Did we not take a chance when we went with Moore and Clausen? If it takes time to transition to the NFL, and Cam lovers say, "Give him time behind a vet for a year," then why is it smart to get rid of Moore and Clausen before they have had the same opportunity? This situation will be 100% better in Carolina this year. Moore had a 98 QB rating in 2009. Why are we all so quick to give up on these 2 QBs who have each started about 10 games?

Take a chance? no. Take a calculated risk? yes. But impatience will get you nowhere. Moore and Clausen need another year. Bring in a 35 year old vet for precautionary purposes. Give Newton up to $55 million? That is not a chance, that is gambling without regarding the red flags. (See Raiders, Jamarcus Russell; Chargers, Ryan Leaf; Titans, Vince Young; Bengals, Akili Smith; Lions, Joey Harrington; Ravens, Kyle Boller; Browns, Tim Couch; Jaguars, Byron Leftwich; Lions, Andre Ware; Cardinals, Matt Leinart; Broncos, The Golden Calf of Bristol; 49ers, Alex Smith; Vikings, Tavares Jackson)--Only Akili Smith had more red flags concerning character, and he was a more accurate passer. Also a one-hit wonder in college with 30 TDs. These organizations took a chance.

Akili Smith was a mobile, athletic qb with better accuracy than Newton. He was also a 1-hit wonder, and he also threw 30 TD passes in 1998. He also had red flags concerning character, and he also ran a 1-read offense. He is considered the second biggest bust at QB (behind Leaf) in NFL history. If he were playing today, the same people supporting Cam would be SCREAMING for him, and calling people who say, "wait just a minute" racists. Just the way it is. You can't change dumb when the mind closes. It is locked in forever.

Not one QB the Panthers have on their roster or even QB that has been on their roster is starter material on any team. If you are fine playing for next year, then the year after that then keep telling me we shouldn't have drafted Newton. When Newton proves to be that one guy that can turn a franchise around you will eat crow my friend.

Btw you forgot guys like Big Ben, Vick, Josh Freeman, and Jay Cutler. All of those QB's ran the ball like Newton did in college and all of them were in the playoffs last year.

Look, i had read it in a chat back in february; that chat was long since overwritten. It's the only place I could find the quote, so I had to make due. I know Gantt said it, but hey believe what you want.

Obviously this would be a pretty big thing if it was true, and if it was a real issue. So, doesn't it stand to reason that if it was, there would be more than a comment thread on a blog somewhere that referenced it? It just seems to me that this is a lot to do about nothing.

I guess someone will have to ask Gantt about it again..I'm not a twitter user but I'm sure some one can find out. I'm sure the observer wouldn't of made a full fledged article out of something like this considering the firestorm it would cause with Panthers brass.

I have no idea if Smith was more accurate because I never saw him play a game, but I can guarantee you that completion percentage alone doesn't tell you a damn thing about which one of them was more accurate.

Really, how else are you going to judge it?

There is a discussion about this in another thread (the Jerry Rice one about Cam having accuracy questions), but things like ball placement and the kind of throws a player is making are very informative. You basically can't tell real accuracy without breaking down a play or at very least watching the guy play.

There's a certain value to completion percentage, but with the way offenses in college are designed now, it is really hard to compare completion percentage even between players on different teams today, let alone on different teams years apart.
