South Florida defensive lineman Terrell McClain conducted a private workout today for a Carolina Panthers defensive line coach, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

McClain is building momentum in NFL circles following a strong Pro Day workout where he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.82 and 4.95 seconds.

All but two NFL teams were at the workout. New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick was there as well as Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo, coach Lovie Smith and personnel executive Tim Ruskell.

According to an NFL source, McClain's stock is rising into second-round consideration.

He has drawn particular interest from the Bears, Patriots, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, St. Louis Rams, Panthers, New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He spoke with Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome during the East-West Shrine all-star game.

The 6-foot-2, 297-pounder was an All-Big East Conference selection, posting 24 tackles three sacks and 4 1/2 tackles for losses last season.

As a junior, he recorded 25 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks, five tackles for losses, a forced fumble and three quarterback pressures.

McClain was also recruited by Alabama, Auburn, Florida, North Carolina State and South Carolina.

Looks like we are really concentrating on DT in the 3rd round.. looks like Dareus may not be our pick at #1..

Due diligence.

Though if they think they could get this guy in the third, and think he's good enough, I could see taking Peterson in the first.

Be a heck of a risk though. Go that route and what happens if another team takes him in the second?

I think you have to make that first pick the best guy and deal with what happens next when you come to it.

Having the first pick in the 3rd round will give us a great shot at this prospect. All the sites I have seen have this guy rated at low 3rd/high 4th round. I am sure they could get him at the top of the 3rd, but they may be looking at him with a comp selection. It depends on how well they like him, I suppose.

I just don't get the rationale of spending our first two picks on defense when our offense blows.

However, we could be adopting the Texans mentality when they passed on the superstar for Mario Williams and our aim is to stop the QBs in our division until we can find one of our own. I just don't know if I can take Jimmy Clausen's lame duck knuckleball for another season.

reggie bush turned out to not be the superstar the hype machine made him appear to be.
