Rebuilding: A 2-year process

If we need a QB so badly, and all of the QBs are projects, then if we take one, (with the CBA/lockout mess) he will not play until 2012. However, if we build the team in other areas this year, then next season we could trade up if necessary and get the franchise QB. He then gets camps, OTAs, summer workouts, 3 months of studying, training camp and the preseason to prepare himself. Could start in 2012.

The difference? Drafting a QB next year would give us a player whose contract would expire in 2016 (probably). Draft one this year, you get three years before the contract becomes an issue--not four. Think of this as year 1 of a 2 year process.

Having a developmental, first pick Qb on the bench would only heighten tension next year. When we lost, fans would scream for him, even if he is not ready. Not drafting a QB would prevent Clausen II from happening.

So then we draft one next year, but we sit him for the season because that's the correct way to do it, right?

So 3 seasons from now, we just start to find out if we've addressed the QB issue.

This honestly seems like a "omg wait for LUCK" post.

I'm sure Rivera is fine tanking 3 years of his 4 year contract in his first head coaching gig.

Not what I said. Your powers of inference are astounding. Why buy a 2011 car and not drive it until 2012?

Why draft a QB you cannot develop?

Not QB drafted in the top 5 should be sitting at any point. Not in this day and age

THere will be 3, maybe 4 QBs next year more prepared to start than any QB this season. But the reason I think it is a waste has everything to do with the lockout. Sloth skimmed over that important detail to hit his own agenda.

My idea is this. You take best pick available, either Green/Peterson (I wouldn't take DT No.1 cause this draft seems pretty stacked at DT), because there is not a QB in this class that (IMO) is a franchise guy. So, take a sure thing, sign a vet (ik there are few, and no free agency until the CBA is resolved), and take your franchise QB in next years draft.

Thus, your almost guranteed a sure fire starter from this draft and a franchise QB in next year's draft instead of a possible bust at QB this draft and drafting another QB next year.

Either way, the panthers will be still drafting a franchise QB one year and a solid starter the next year regardless, because a rookie qb this year is not making this team good enough to get out of the top ten for next year.

So why not draft BPA this year and QB next, and presumably get two sure things rather than taking a huge risk on over inflated QB prospects this year? idk, maybe I'm just pre-draft over analyzed and fried.

Kinda what I was thinking in another thread. Remember I posted that last night..and I was hammered drunk..Spring Break '11 is awesome.

Andrew Luck will save us

OK, whatever. Simplify and distort the meaning if it makes it easier for you to understand. You got me. Even though it is a smart thing to do regardless of who is on the table now and who is on the table for next year, this has to be black and white for some of you. Jees.

There's not a single QB in this year's draft pool that I'd be comfortable starting right away.

The guy who's the closest mentally would be Ryan Mallett, but he's so foot-slow I'd be worried he might not handle the speed of the pro game well (and that's not even broaching the character issues).

That has been my sentiment the whole time. But I guess as it gets closer and the more things you hear, opinions kinda change. If our FO thinks one of these guys is The Guy, regardless of what we as fans think, then they should choose him. Hopefully, we wont be pressured into taking a QB because we feel we need one that bad.

My powers of inference are pretty kick-ass.

You're inferring that we'd be drafting high.

You're inferring that we'd be better off biting the bullet and gunning for a franchise guy next year.

Your post was a dolled up "I WANT LUUUUUCK".

People love to make bold ass predictions how are you so sure that Barkley, Luck will pan out early on verses Cam, Gabbert, or Mallet? that's your opinion they'll be more prepared.

The Golden Calf of Bristol and Clausen should have showed you that no one knows fans, scouts nor the media who will be productive at the Pro level.

I agree, although for some weird reason I'm thinking one of those guys might could do something. Damn pressure!!!!
