So, why draft a QB when you cannot get him ready to play? Can you get a DT ready? Yes.

A rookie QB needs:

A solid OL (check)

A solid running game (check)

Good WRs

A solid defense

Since Smith might be gone, it seems we need defense (CB, DT) and WR before the QB can be effective here.

The rookie QB on any team will be unable to play this season because they are all projects and they are locked out indefinately. So......

Take the opportunity to draft the foundation. THere will be QBs available next season and time to groom them before the season.

I agree 100% and I hope this is factoring into the minds of our front office.The infrastructure has to be in place for a young qb to thrive.The fans are going to have to suck up to the fact that Hurney,Fox and JR collectively blew it last year with the draft,letting Fa's like Vincent go, and not picking up a veteran qb early in the year.Fox was a lame duck coach which made it a colabertive clusterf**k

Even if they have a winning record next season, they won't be a success unless they can do it two years in a row.

I also agree with TRD that we aren't nearly as far off as many people like to claim we are, especially that national media who says we are awful. We had an awful season, but have many pieces already in place.

We can use this draft to shore up a top 5 defense. That will get us in contention for a wildcard. Another piece or two after that, and we're right in the thick of the division championship.

I want .500... and I don't think that's unreasonable. We aren't THAT far removed from being a team to be reckoned with in the NFC South.

There are a lot of reasons we were 2-14 last year. A lot of that had to do with Davidson who is now gone. I think even if we pass on Newton and stick with Moore and we will improve simply by having a competent OC.

Defensively we had so many injuries last year and was still in the top half of the league in per possession statistics. My hope is that being healthy and having the great defensive minds on on this coaching staff we will be even better this next season.

I think the talent is here to be competitive next year no matter who we draft.

This is the main reason I do not want a rookie QB. They will set this team back and we don't need that. I know it sounds crazy because OMG Clausen/Moore suck!!!!one! but we really are a talented team.

With Moore or Palmer leading the way, I feel we can make the playoffs and possibly make a run depending on how good our defense is, since defense wins championships.

Next year, depending on our moves and considering our schedule, I'll be happy with greater than 5 wins.

I just dont like the fact people think we should be able to turn this thing around to immediate contention next year. Unfortunately, it pretty much takes a franchise QB to do that, and unless there is one in the draft, then we should play it out long term. It depends which route we decide to take, but I won't say a record right now. I just want us to improve from week-to-week. Seeing that we are already a young squad, setting too high expectations may be unreasonable and lead to disappointment. There is no way our offense performs as bad as they did last year, and hopefully the defense continues to improve(people think we were a top 15 defense or whatever last year looking at stats, but if you really watched us play, it's not hard to see those stats are a little misleading).

We were 2-14 for a couple reasons: lack of leadership and accountability, and incompetent offensive coaching.
